However, a recent British study reveals that even individuals who begin exercising at age 50 can achieve better health metrics than their less active peers if they maintain consistent exercise habits.
Researchers from University College London and other institutions recently reported in the academic journal Circulation that they conducted a 10-year follow-up study on over 4,000 middle-aged and older adults, with an average age of approximately 49 at the study's outset. Results showed that about half of the participants met the recommended exercise standards—engaging in at least 2.5 hours of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity weekly.This intensity level is intuitively characterized by an accelerated heart rate and possible sweating during exercise, achievable through activities like running or playing sports.
Analyzing the participants' health metrics, researchers found that those meeting the exercise targets exhibited lower levels of inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein compared to less active individuals.Inflammation is commonly associated with cardiovascular disease risk, a prevalent condition among older adults. These findings suggest that consistent exercise contributes to better overall health in this population. Exercise for older adults must be tailored to their unique physical conditions. The content, physiological load, and methods of activity should align with individual physiological capabilities. Older adults should adhere to four "don'ts" and four "dos" when exercising.
Four Essentials for Middle-Aged and Elderly Exercise
1. Tailor to individual capacity and proceed within limits.
Select appropriate content and methods based on personal circumstances and fitness level. Generally, engage in activities that are steady-paced, slow-motion, low-intensity, simple, and safe—such as health exercises, qigong, tai chi, jogging, brisk walking, or walk-run intervals.
Second, progress gradually. Keep each session moderate in intensity. Start with lighter activity levels, stopping when you feel slightly fatigued. After consistent practice without fatigue, gradually increase the workload. Improved adaptability indicates enhanced physical fitness.
Third, maintain consistency.
Physical exercise only yields results through unwavering persistence. Intermittent efforts—like fishing for three days and drying nets for two—fail to provide continuous stimulation to organ systems, causing benefits to fade. Persistence begins with participation: developing habits through engagement sparks interest, and genuine enjoyment arises from that interest.
Fourth, prioritize safety and hygiene.Physical exercise is a scientific physical activity. Each movement's rhythm, force intensity, duration, and internal focus follows specific patterns and characteristics. Acting recklessly without scientific guidance can produce counterproductive results. Before exercising, perform warm-up activities; during exercise, ensure the safety of the environment and surroundings; understand your body's responses during movement and master sports hygiene knowledge regarding sweating, hydration, clothing, self-monitoring, and supervision.
Four Taboos for Middle-Aged and Elderly Exercise
1. Avoid weight-bearing exercises.
As muscles in the elderly begin to atrophy, ligament elasticity diminishes, bone mineral density increases, and joint mobility becomes restricted. Weight-bearing exercises heighten the risk of fractures, bone cracks, and damage to joints, muscles, and ligaments.
2. Avoid breath-holding exercises.
Respiratory muscles weaken in older adults, while lung connective tissue increases and alveolar elasticity decreases. Holding breath during physical activity can damage respiratory muscles and cause alveolar rupture, leading to bronchopulmonary hemorrhage.
Third, avoid high-intensity exercise.
Elderly individuals experience diminished cardiac contractility, reduced vascular elasticity, narrowed blood vessel lumens, and increased blood flow resistance, all of which place greater strain on the heart.Additionally, diminished respiratory function reduces lung capacity and ventilation, leading to insufficient oxygen supply. The heightened oxygen demand during rapid exercise can easily cause oxygen deprivation and fainting. This is particularly dangerous for individuals with heart disease or hypertension, as rapid exercise can trigger sudden spikes in pulse rate and blood pressure, potentially resulting in accidents.
Fourth, avoid competitive or confrontational activities.
Competition and confrontation inevitably cause intense nervous excitement. Confrontational activities further generate a desire to win by exerting maximum effort. This creates a conflict between physiological capacity and psychological drive, leading to severe consequences for those with cardiovascular diseases.
