As the saying goes, "The feet are the second heart of the human body." The proverb "Cold begins at the feet" underscores the importance of foot care in winter health maintenance.Keep your feet active to promote smooth circulation of qi and blood. Before bed each night, soak your feet in warm water around 40°C (104°F) to raise yang energy, enhance overall circulation, and improve sleep. After soaking, use your right hand to massage the Yongquan point on your left foot 36 times, then switch hands to massage the same point on your right foot 36 times.
2. Kidney Health Maintenance
Rotating the waist and massaging the kidneys strengthens yang energy. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that human yang energy originates from the kidneys, making kidney yang particularly vulnerable to cold pathogens. Entering winter, one must not become lazy and inactive. Elderly individuals should not stay indoors due to cold weather but persist in morning and evening exercises to enhance disease resistance.Winter also requires extra back warmth. Take walks outdoors during sunny midday hours to aid the ascension of kidney yang energy. Regularly rub the Shenshu acupoint (located 1.5 cun lateral to the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra) to replenish kidney qi and enhance cold resistance. The waist is the residence of the kidneys. Perform waist rotations indoors daily: place hands on hips with thumbs on waist points and fingers forward, rotating clockwise and counterclockwise 36 times each. Ensure full range of motion during each rotation.Wear a scarf and mask outdoors. Drink plenty of warm water daily to prevent excessive dryness in the respiratory tract. Open windows at home after 9 a.m. or boil vinegar indoors to sterilize the air and reduce the risk of lung infections. For nasal congestion after a cold, rub the sides of your nostrils with the backs of your thumbs until warm—this will clear congestion immediately.Practice the "Exhale Old, Inhale Fresh" breathing technique: in a well-ventilated area, open your mouth wide and forcefully exhale with a loud "Ha!" to expel all stale air from your body. 4. Head Care Avoid direct exposure to cold winds. Wear a hat that covers your forehead when going out. When facing strong winds, walk sideways to the wind and shield your head with your hands or forearms.Daily scalp massage: Run fingers along the midline of the head, then spread fingers to massage the entire scalp in a circular motion. Perform 36 rotations clockwise and 36 counterclockwise to stimulate meridians, promote blood circulation, and enhance the head's resistance to cold.Rub your hands together until warm, then use your palms to massage your face, promoting blood circulation. Alternatively, use your thumb and index finger to pinch and rub both ears from top to bottom along the auricle until they become red and warm.
