Scientific Napping Can Relieve Fatigue

Especially after lunch, blood flow significantly increases to the digestive tract while decreasing to the brain. This reduces oxygen and nutrient delivery to the brain, triggering a natural sleep rhythm in the body's biological clock. People often feel sluggish and drowsy during this period.
At this time, men should take a short nap to alleviate this lethargy. So, how can one nap scientifically?
1.Keep naps brief, ideally under one hour.
Physiological research indicates human sleep comprises two stages: light sleep and deep sleep. Typically, individuals transition from light to deep sleep 80–100 minutes after falling asleep. During deep sleep, inhibitory processes in the brain's centers intensify, causing many capillary networks in brain tissue to temporarily close. This reduces cerebral blood flow and significantly lowers metabolic activity.
If individuals are abruptly awakened during deep sleep, the deep inhibitory processes in the cerebral cortex cannot be immediately reversed, and the closed capillary networks cannot instantly reopen. This inevitably causes transient cerebral hypoperfusion and temporary autonomic nervous system dysfunction, resulting in significant discomfort. This unpleasant sensation typically persists for about 30 minutes before gradually dissipating. Thus, longer naps aren't necessarily better; they should ideally last under an hour. This effectively relieves fatigue without inducing deep sleep that makes waking difficult. 2. Avoid napping immediately after meals. After eating, don't sit or lie down right away. Stand for 30 minutes—you can wash dishes, trim plants, or do similar activities. Then take a 30-minute walk downstairs to aid digestion. Only then should you lie down, ideally for just 30 minutes. Many people report headaches after napping, yet still feel sleepy afterward. This occurs because oversleeping causes oxygen deprivation in the brain. After lunch, the stomach is filled with undigested food, and lying down immediately can induce a feeling of fullness. The correct approach is to engage in light activity after lunch—like walking or abdominal massage—before napping. This aids digestion and nutrient absorption. 3. Pay attention to sleeping posture. It's common to see people dozing off in chairs or on couches during naps, or even resting their heads on desks. These practices are actually unscientific.During sleep, muscles relax, heart rate slows, blood vessels dilate, blood pressure drops, and blood flow to the brain decreases. Especially after lunch, when more blood is directed to the digestive system, sitting while sleeping can lead to oxygen deprivation in the brain over time, causing discomfort like heaviness in the head, fatigue, and weak legs. Sleeping with your head on a desk compresses the chest, hinders breathing, and increases strain on the heart and lungs. It's generally believed that sleeping on your right side is optimal, as this reduces strain on the heart, increases blood flow to the liver, and aids digestion and metabolism. However, given the short duration of a nap, there's no need to insist on specific sleeping positions like left-side, right-side, or flat on your back. The key is to fall asleep quickly.
