Pillow Too High? Switch to a Buckwheat Pillow
We spend roughly one-third of our lives resting on pillows. Ancient wisdom speaks of "sleeping soundly on a high pillow," and some still prefer elevated pillows for comfort. In reality, an overly high pillow does more harm than good. Over time, it can lead to cervical spine disorders, impair blood supply to the brain, and in severe cases, disrupt nerve transmission related to sexual arousal, potentially causing erectile dysfunction. It may also cause the trachea to bend forward, restricting breathing and affecting heart and lung function.
Tip: The ideal pillow height should match the height of your clenched fist. Filling material is also crucial—good fillers offer better fluidity and conformability, aiding muscle relaxation. Buckwheat hulls and tea leaves are excellent choices.
Too-Hard Mattress: Poor Sleep Harms Sexual Health
Sleeping on an overly soft bed increases the body's contact surface area with the mattress, amplifying pressure points. This impedes surface blood circulation and compresses lumbar and back muscles, often causing lower back pain, stiffness, and limb fatigue.
While an overly firm mattress may not severely impact spinal health, excessive pressure on the shoulders and hips can diminish sleep quality, thereby affecting sexual desire.
Additionally, regularly wash bedding and allow the mattress to breathe. Otherwise, a damp mattress can harbor dust mites, triggering skin inflammation.
Tip: Choose a mattress of moderate firmness based on your sleep preferences, or opt for a dual-sided mattress with one side made of palm fiber and the other of memory foam. Rotate it regularly to keep the mattress ventilated.
Excessive Room Temperature: Also Affects Libido
Researchers at a German university confirmed that refrigerating apples prolongs their freshness—a principle applicable to the human body. Higher temperatures accelerate metabolism, accelerating aging, which in turn impacts sexual function. Therefore, avoid overly warm room temperatures during summer sleep.
Tip: While lower temperatures may slow aging, excessively cold air conditioning wastes energy and is unenvironmentally friendly. Setting the AC to around 28°C (82°F) provides optimal comfort—neither too hot nor too cold—maintaining good physical condition and sexual desire.
Sleeping Too Long: Try Gentle Exercise
The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine states, "Prolonged lying harms qi." This means excessive rest or sleep without physical activity can lead to qi deficiency over time. Symptoms include lethargy, fatigue, poor appetite, palpitations, and shortness of breath.
Furthermore, prolonged lying disrupts the body's natural blood circulation patterns. Slowed heart rate and reduced blood flow can lead to insufficient cerebral blood supply, causing increasing lethargy and potentially disrupting sexual function.
Solution: Tai Chi is one of the best exercises for maintaining reproductive health.Practicing Tai Chi is a slow-paced activity that promotes mental relaxation. The gentle rise and fall of the lower abdomen, the sinking of energy to the lower abdomen, and the contraction of the anal sphincter to activate kidney function all contribute to strengthening the reproductive system—particularly the male testes—enhancing their functionality and supporting reproductive health. Thinking in Bed: Don't Bring Anxiety to Bed Keep your bedroom simple, reserving it solely for sleep.Avoid using it for too many other activities, as your bed should not become a problem-solving space.
Tip: Fifteen minutes before bed, jot down your anxieties or concerns along with potential solutions on paper. This prevents the constant need to remind yourself of tasks. If daytime worries follow you to bed, tell yourself you'll address these distractions during your designated "worry time" the next day.
Stay in bed even if you can't sleep: Wait until drowsy to lie down
Time spent in bed correlates with sleep efficiency, measured as: Actual time asleep / Time in bed × 100%. For example, lying in bed for 8 hours but sleeping only 5 hours yields 67.8% sleep efficiency. Young adults should aim for over 85%.
Tip: If you notice poor sleep efficiency, avoid forcing yourself to stay in bed. Reduce your time in bed and only extend it once you feel sleepy or after improving your sleep efficiency.
Additionally, older adults should avoid these two common misconceptions:
Drinking alcohol before bed: Reduces sleep quality
Some seniors habitually drink small amounts of alcohol and may believe that a nightcap improves sleep. However, experts note that pre-sleep alcohol actually diminishes sleep quality. While alcohol suppresses the central nervous system, aiding initial sleep onset, its effects disrupt the entire sleep cycle. This leads to frequent early awakenings, lower sleep quality, and reduced deep sleep duration. In reality, reduced daytime activity after retirement often leads to insufficient daytime stimulation, negatively impacting nighttime sleep. This manifests as lighter sleep, easier awakening, and early morning wakefulness, leaving individuals feeling drowsy during the day. Experts therefore advise seniors to maintain alertness during the day to ensure high-quality nighttime sleep. Of course, if drowsiness occurs between 1-2 PM, a short nap of 15-30 minutes is acceptable.
