Fear is the primary symptom of phobia. When individuals with phobias encounter certain external stimuli or find themselves in specific situations, they experience sudden, intense terror. Triggers vary among patients, with common examples including social anxiety, specific phobias, and agoraphobia.
Avoidance Behavior
Patients exhibit persistent or recurrent avoidance behaviors.
To escape fear-inducing triggers, individuals will go to great lengths to evade them. For instance, those with social anxiety avoid social settings, fearing interaction not only with strangers but even with familiar people.
Physiological Reactions
During panic attacks, patients often experience pronounced physical symptoms. Common manifestations include trembling, sweating, blushing, and palpitations. More severe cases may involve dizziness, nausea, or vomiting. Prolonged exposure to such reactions can cause physical harm.
Anxiety and Restlessness
Patients may begin worrying even before encountering the feared scenario or object, fretting over whether their phobia will flare up and cause adverse effects. This preoccupation often triggers significant anxiety and restlessness.
Lack of Control
Most sufferers recognize their fears as excessive, irrational, and unnecessary. Yet they remain powerless to control these fears. Without intervention, suppressing them proves difficult.
