The first exercise is upper trapezius stretch. Tuck your chin in, place one hand behind your waist and the other behind your ear, then tilt your head to one side until you feel a mild stretch in the opposite trapezius muscle. Hold for 15 seconds.
The second exercise is pectoralis stretch.Externally rotate and abduct one shoulder joint approximately 90 degrees, then pull it backward until a mild stretch is felt in the pectoral muscle. Hold for 15 seconds.
The third exercise is the anterior neck muscle stretch. Cross your hands over your collarbones, slightly tuck your chin, and fully tilt your head backward until a mild stretch is felt in the front neck muscles. Hold for 15 seconds.
U.S. Study Urges Proper Computer Posture
Leaning forward with your face close to the screen is a natural and common posture for computer users. However, a recent U.S. study indicates this position places significant strain on the neck, leading to discomfort and pain. To reduce harm, a simple adjustment is needed—keep your head aligned as straight as possible with your body.
Researchers from San Francisco State University published a report in the latest issue of the American journal Biofeedback, stating that forward head posture can cause fatigue, headaches, lack of concentration, and muscle tension. Maintaining this posture for extended periods can also damage the spine, making it difficult to even turn one's head.
In the study, 125 students maintained a forward-head posture for 30 seconds, with 98% reporting varying degrees of pain in the head, neck, or eyes. Electromyography further revealed that this posture significantly increases muscle tension in the trapezius muscles.
Researchers note that when using a computer with an upright posture where the head aligns directly above the neck, back muscles can easily support the head and neck.Typically, the head and neck weigh approximately 5.5 kilograms. However, when the head tilts forward at a 45-degree angle, the neck becomes a "fulcrum," and the body functions like a long lever that must "lift" the weight of the head and neck. For the relevant muscles, the head and neck then feel equivalent to 20.5 kilograms.
Therefore, researchers advise that if you experience prolonged computer use accompanied by shoulder, neck, or back pain, the first step is to assess your posture. Maintain a straight line from your head to your body whenever possible.
