1. Infectious causes: Bacterial or viral infections transmitted through the digestive tract.
2. Dietary causes: Consumption of coarse or spoiled foods, poor eating habits, or allergies to foods like seafood.
3. Coexisting chronic conditions: Such as thyroid disorders, tuberculosis, colitis, etc.Different types of diarrhea require different approaches. Diarrhea during pregnancy warrants attention but not undue anxiety. First, address the cause. Switch to a liquid, easily digestible diet. Fast if necessary and rehydrate. For non-infectious diarrhea—where infection is ruled out—medication is generally unnecessary. Adequate rehydration suffices.Replenish fluids and electrolytes lost through diarrhea by drinking rice water with a small amount of salt and sugar. In severe cases, fasting and intravenous hydration may be required. Take Smecta or activated charcoal tablets to protect the gastrointestinal mucosa; alternatively, Lactobacillus tablets or Lactase tablets can be used to regulate intestinal flora and restore balance.
For infectious diarrhea, if laboratory tests indicate an infectious agent, erythromycin or cephalosporin antibiotics may be necessary. These medications are relatively safe for both mother and baby. However, even when safe, use should be minimized or avoided whenever possible, with prompt fluid replacement.
Avoid Diarrhea During Late Pregnancy
Pregnant women with diarrhea typically resume normal bowel movements within 24 to 96 hours. At this stage, the burden on all maternal organs significantly increases. Diarrhea can exacerbate this stress, further straining the heart, kidneys, and other vital organs. Mild cases may trigger premature labor, while severe cases pose life-threatening risks.
Important Reminders
1. Some expectant mothers may have lactose intolerance due to insufficient lactase in their intestines, making milk powder unsuitable.
2. Expectant mothers with recurrent diarrhea should check for underlying chronic conditions like thyroid disease, tuberculosis, or colitis.
3. Consuming overly fatty broths like "chicken soup" or "bone broth" can also cause diarrhea.
4. If diarrhea is suspected to be caused by food allergies, pregnant women should promptly identify the allergenic food and avoid it.
5. Maintain a positive mindset, as excessive stress can also trigger diarrhea.
