Avoid substituting meals with fried potato chips, candy, or cake, as these foods are typically high in calories, low in nutrients, and difficult to digest. II. Spicy Foods When nursing mothers experience poor appetite, they may turn to spicy foods to stimulate their appetite. However, this can exacerbate internal heat, potentially leading to discomfort such as mouth ulcers and constipation. Therefore, avoid pungent foods like raw garlic, chili peppers, black pepper, fennel, and leeks within the first month postpartum.
Throughout the entire breastfeeding period, mothers should also minimize intake of such foods, as they can affect the baby through breast milk and cause the baby to develop heatiness.
III. Cold-Natured Foods That Reduce Milk Supply
Sweet-cool meats like pork heart, duck meat, and squid decrease milk production and should be avoided by nursing mothers. Cold-natured vegetables such as purslane, cucumber, winter melon, bitter melon, cucumber melon, and bamboo shoots may cause gastrointestinal discomfort or reduce milk supply in nursing mothers. Mothers with younger infants should avoid these.Fruits like pears, watermelon, and citrus are cold in nature and unsuitable for postpartum mothers who are still recovering and haven't completed their confinement period. Foods such as chives and malt water have milk-suppressing effects and should be avoided. Foods that may cause allergies in babies, like oranges and onions, can lead to diarrhea and gas. Additionally, mothers should closely monitor their baby's skin for rashes and avoid foods that trigger allergic reactions.
IV. Warm-natured Fruits
Hawthorn, cherries, pomegranates, and lychees are warm-natured. However, excessive consumption of warm-natured fruits can lead to internal heat. Breastfeeding mothers should avoid eating too much of these.
