Kidney deficiency does not refer to conventional weakness of kidney function but represents a holistic concept in traditional Chinese medicine. In this episode of MSN China's "Doctor's Lecture Hall," Professor Chen Xiaoye from the Institute of Basic Theory at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences explains that everyone harbors some degree of kidney deficiency issues.
The True Meaning of Kidney Deficiency
According to traditional Chinese medicine, kidney deficiency is a holistic concept. Visible symptoms include graying hair, tooth loss, lower back soreness, weak legs, dizziness, and tinnitus. However, both ancient TCM research on deficiency syndromes and modern integrated Chinese-Western studies indicate that kidney deficiency transcends mere physical ailments.
It does not refer to the conventional kidneys, nor to the external kidneys (reproductive system) in TCM, nor even to the adrenal glands, hypothalamus, or pituitary gland alone. In short, it is not localized to any specific organ. Whenever a particular system becomes extremely deficient, it is termed kidney deficiency. For instance, if this occurs in the heart, manifesting as cardiac weakness, premature aging, or extreme depletion, it falls under the holistic concept of kidney deficiency.
Overstimulation of a specific area can lead to disease.
Many people, especially young adults, appear perfectly healthy on the outside and lead seemingly normal lives. Yet internally, a particular system may be weak and overtaxed, reaching a state of extreme deficiency without their awareness.
Take excessive stimulation of a body part, for instance—esophageal cancer being the most obvious example. Some individuals excessively consume spicy or scalding foods, repeatedly irritating the esophagus. This can lead to erosion or more severe hyperplasia. Yet before cancer develops, such damage remains largely imperceptible and has no systemic impact, as the esophagus is a sensory-insensitive area.Consider another example: why do many people ultimately succumb to chronic conditions? Take someone with persistent diarrhea. Their intestines endure excessive stimulation—whereas normal bowel movements occur once daily, this person experiences three episodes daily, each involving diarrhea. Over time, this persistent irritation also carries a risk of cancerous transformation.
The areas most susceptible to overstimulation vary by individual. For instance, postmenopausal women using estrogen supplements may experience hyperplasia in breast and uterine epithelial tissues—equivalent to excessive stimulation. Similarly, excessive stimulation of the male prostate may lead to pathological changes.
Moderate Brain Use Reduces Dementia Risk
Regarding overuse, one crucial aspect to note is brain activity.Personally, I believe that engaging the mind in ways rooted in traditional Chinese culture may reduce susceptibility to cognitive disorders, commonly known as Alzheimer's disease. So, what does traditional Chinese cultural engagement of the mind entail? It involves enjoying the process while using the mind. The act of mental engagement itself becomes a form of enjoyment. This contrasts sharply with modern scientific approaches to mental work, which often forcefully violate natural rhythms, creating a task-oriented, unpleasant experience. In traditional Chinese culture, activities like exploring life's mysteries, pursuing deeper insights through disciplines such as calligraphy, traditional painting, and garden design—these processes naturally align with the brain's inherent rhythms. Such engagement is less likely to cause brain damage and significantly reduces the risk of cognitive impairment. Should You Start Kidney Tonification at Age 30? When localized stimulation reaches a certain threshold, it can lead to deficiency—a manifestation of kidney deficiency. When should kidney tonification begin? My answer is generally around age 30. After 30, the body begins its decline, with physical stamina starting to lag—this represents a macro, systemic deficiency. However, beyond the whole, specific bodily systems may deplete faster than others. Considering this, I believe young adults under significant life stress may need to start tonifying around age 20.
Before organs fail, they undergo a compensatory phase where the body exhaustively uses reserves to sustain daily functions. Thus, the appearance of gray hair signals the onset of this compensation. Starting supplementation in one's 20s is perfectly acceptable, but the dosage should be lower than that required for treating illness.
Traditional Chinese medicine categorizes kidney tonification into multiple levels. When kidney deficiency reaches its extreme, termed kidney essence deficiency or insufficiency of the marrow sea, physical changes manifest: poor posture, stooped shoulders and knees, and impaired memory. Thus, kidney tonification must address multiple levels—nourishing kidney yin, strengthening kidney yang, and replenishing marrow. In herbal formulations, Liuwei Dihuang Wan serves as the foundational kidney-tonifying formula. However, note that for non-therapeutic tonification, taking only 1/6 of the recommended dose per serving is sufficient.
