Higher recurrence rate in subsequent pregnancies, with significant long-term risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Effects on the fetus: High incidence of macrosomia (excessively large fetus) or intrauterine growth restriction (excessively small fetus). Increased risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, and congenital anomalies.
Effects on the newborn: Impaired respiratory function, hypoglycemia.
Early symptoms of gestational diabetes: Increased hunger, excessive eating and drinking, frequent urination. Treatment of gestational diabetes requires first recognizing its serious risks—it's not merely a minor issue like sugar in urine, but significantly impacts both mother and baby. Second, understand it is manageable. Most pregnant women with gestational diabetes can control blood sugar through education, dietary management under medical guidance, and increased physical activity.
Dietary management involves structuring meals around low-sugar, low-fat, moderate-protein foods rich in fiber. Opt for steaming or boiling over frying. Limit portion sizes per meal and increase meal frequency. Adjust food intake based on fasting and postprandial blood glucose monitoring. Medication becomes necessary if blood sugar remains uncontrolled.Currently, subcutaneous insulin injections are the primary medication for managing gestational diabetes in China. Insulin dosage varies significantly between individuals and changes throughout pregnancy, so it must be administered under strict medical supervision to prevent hypoglycemia or inadequate control.
Satisfactory blood glucose control during pregnancy is defined as: no significant hunger, fasting blood glucose between 3.3-5.6 mmol/L; 30 minutes before meals between 3.3-5.8 mmol/L; 2 hours after meals between 4.4-6.7 mmol/L; and overnight levels between 4.4-6.7 mmol/L.
Prevention of gestational diabetes: The body naturally produces increased insulin-like substances during pregnancy, which we cannot easily alter.However, we can reduce the body's burden through dietary control, eating smaller, more frequent meals. Simultaneously, appropriate exercise—such as post-meal walks or gentle calisthenics—can enhance glucose utilization, improve blood sugar levels, and delay or prevent the onset of diabetes. Should it occur, there's no need for excessive anxiety. Most pregnant women with gestational diabetes can manage it effectively under medical guidance through diet control and moderate exercise. With proper management, these women can still have a smooth delivery.
