Any form of exercise requires moderation; otherwise, it can easily cause physical damage. This is especially true after intense workouts, as the physical toll is immense. So, what should you avoid after strenuous exercise?Below, we detail post-exercise precautions and taboos.
Taboo #1: Immediate Rest
During intense exercise, heart rate accelerates, muscles and capillaries dilate, and blood flow increases. Rhythmic muscle contractions compress small veins, rapidly returning blood to the heart. If you stop and rest immediately, this rhythmic contraction ceases. The large volume of blood that had flowed into the muscles can no longer be pumped back to the heart through muscle contraction. This causes a drop in blood pressure, leading to temporary cerebral ischemia. Symptoms include palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, blurred vision, pallor, and even shock or fainting. Therefore, after intense exercise, continue with light movements until your breathing and heart rate return to near-normal levels before resting.
Taboo 2: Immediate Bathing
After strenuous exercise, the body maintains constant temperature by dilating surface blood vessels and enlarging sweat pores to increase perspiration for heat dissipation. Taking a cold bath at this time causes sudden vascular constriction due to the shock, increasing circulatory resistance. Simultaneously, the body's resistance weakens, making one susceptible to illness.Conversely, a hot bath further increases blood flow to the skin, diverting excessive blood to muscles and skin. This can cause insufficient blood supply to the heart and brain, leading to dizziness in mild cases or even collapse and shock in severe cases. It may also trigger other chronic conditions. Therefore, always rest for a while after intense exercise before bathing.
Taboo Three: Guzzling Fluids to Quench Thirst
When thirsty after intense exercise, some people guzzle cold water or other beverages. This overburdens the digestive system and dilutes gastric juices. This reduces the stomach's antibacterial function and impairs food digestion.Drinking too quickly also causes blood volume to increase rapidly, suddenly overburdening the heart. This can trigger temporary electrolyte imbalances like potassium and sodium disruption, potentially leading to heart failure, chest tightness, or abdominal distension. Thus, avoid excessive or rapid hydration after exercise, especially cold beverages, as they hinder body heat dissipation and may cause colds, abdominal pain, or other illnesses.
Taboo 4: Excessive Sugar Intake
Some people find sweet treats or sugary drinks comforting after strenuous exercise, mistakenly believing they are beneficial. However, excessive sugar consumption post-workout depletes vitamin B1 reserves, leading to fatigue, loss of appetite, and impaired physical recovery. Therefore, it's best to consume foods rich in vitamin B1 after strenuous exercise, such as vegetables, liver, and eggs.
Taboo 5: Drinking Alcohol to Relieve Fatigue
After intense exercise, the body's functions operate at a heightened level. Consuming alcohol at this time causes the body to absorb alcohol components more rapidly into the bloodstream, causing greater harm to organs like the liver and stomach than usual.Long-term consumption may lead to fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, gastritis, gastric ulcers, dementia, and other conditions. Drinking beer after exercise is also inadvisable, as it increases uric acid levels in the blood, causing significant joint irritation, inflammation, and potentially triggering gout.
Taboo Six: Smoking to Relieve Fatigue
Smoking after exercise accelerates metabolism, forcing organs to work at heightened levels while allowing large amounts of smoke to enter the body. Since the body demands more oxygen post-exercise but cannot obtain it sufficiently, it becomes more vulnerable to the harmful effects of carbon monoxide, nicotine, and other substances. Therefore, smoking at this time is more harmful than usual. Additionally, impaired oxygen absorption hinders post-exercise recovery, making fatigue more pronounced.
Perform full-body relaxation after intense exercise:
1. Upper limb relaxation: Stand with upper body leaning forward, repeatedly shake shoulders and arms until they feel warm.
2. Lower limb relaxation: Lie supine, lift legs, pat and massage thighs (inner, front, and back sides), calves (back side), buttocks, abdomen, and sides of waist.
3. Huddled Knee-Hugging Relaxation: Hug knees with hands, squat down, lower head, and repeatedly shake up and down until the lumbar spine feels warm.
4. Full-Body Resting Exercise: Stand with knees bent, hands supporting the body in front, fully utilizing breath. Take a deep inhalation into the chest, hold the breath, and slowly exhale into the abdomen.
Repeat several times while slowly raising the upper body to a standing position until the pulse returns to its pre-exercise rate.
Exercise aims to strengthen the body, but excessive intensity can disrupt the balance between exertion and recovery, making it counterproductive. Therefore, the post-exercise care outlined above is crucial for fitness enthusiasts!
