After the hard work of childbirth, new mothers must not only care for their babies but also promptly attend to their husbands' physical and emotional needs. For couples who abstained from intimacy throughout pregnancy, the safe arrival of their baby means resuming intimacy can be considered. But how soon after delivery is it safe to resume intimacy? What precautions should be taken? New mothers have just gone through childbirth, so husbands must be especially careful and fully prepared at this time.
Timing for Resuming Intimacy:
Vaginal Birth:
Many women choose vaginal delivery, which benefits both the baby and the mother. Women who give birth vaginally recover faster than those who have C-sections. The postpartum period, lasting about 6 weeks, spans from placenta delivery until all organs (except the breasts) return to their non-pregnant state. The cervix fully recovers within the first 4 weeks, the uterus returns to its pre-pregnancy size by week 6, and the endometrium takes approximately 6 weeks to repair. Considering the healing of perineal wounds, sexual intercourse is prohibited during the entire postpartum period.
Cesarean Section
Cesarean delivery causes greater depletion of a woman's vital energy, requiring a longer postoperative recovery period. Additionally, the expulsion of lochia (the discharge of uterine decidua shedding, containing blood and necrotic decidual tissue) from the abdominal cavity takes significantly longer compared to vaginal delivery.Even with optimal postpartum care, sexual activity should be postponed for at least 60 days.
Postpartum women are physically vulnerable and weakened. Premature resumption of sexual activity may introduce bacteria, impair endometrial healing, and trigger various gynecological inflammations—potentially life-threatening in severe cases.
Once the postpartum recovery period has passed and the body has largely recovered, couples should still observe the following precautions when resuming sexual activity:
1. Prioritize contraception.
To prevent rapid re-pregnancy, both partners must strictly adhere to contraceptive measures. Methods such as condom use remain effective.
2. Practice gentle, gradual intercourse postpartum. The vaginal epithelium remains fragile; rough movements may cause tearing. Use lubricant if necessary.
3. Avoid excessive frequency. Breastfeeding demands significant physical energy; 1-2 times per week is more appropriate.
4. Maintain strict hygiene during intercourse
The female body is still recovering with weakened immunity, making bacterial infections more likely.
Childbirth is a life-changing event. Disregarding your wife's feelings and acting recklessly without consideration is unethical. Therefore, a husband's understanding and care for his wife are crucial.
