The kidneys play a vital role in the body, serving as the foundation of life, especially for children. In recent years, pediatric kidney diseases have shown a significant upward trend, with a substantial portion linked to improper medication use.
Four Categories of Drugs Causing Pediatric Kidney Damage
1.Sulfonamide Drugs
Examples include compound sulfamethoxazole. These drugs can form crystals after ingestion, leading to obstructive nephropathy with symptoms like hematuria, renal colic, or even acute renal failure. Dehydration and elderly patients are particularly susceptible. Therefore, when taking such medications, increase fluid intake and use sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) tablets to alkalinize urine, thereby reducing renal damage.
2. Quinolone Drugs
Such as norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and ofloxacin. Excessive doses of these drugs can cause hematuria and interstitial nephritis, with severe cases leading to acute renal failure.
3. Contrast Media
Widely used in recent years, contrast media increasingly cause acute kidney injury. Their hyperosmolarity can exacerbate renal ischemia and directly exert nephrotoxic effects. As allergens, they may trigger systemic allergic reactions affecting the kidneys.
4. Aminoglycoside Antibiotics

Why does kidney injury "prefer" children?
Children's kidneys are not yet fully developed, making them particularly susceptible to drug-induced kidney damage. Additionally, patients with pre-existing renal impairment, allergic constitutions, or dehydration are also prone to drug-induced nephrotoxicity. The risk is especially high when two or more nephrotoxic drugs are used concurrently.Once drug-induced kidney damage occurs, it severely impacts the patient's health.
