What to do when porcelain veneers chip
The most troublesome issue with porcelain veneers is the occasional chipping, which is difficult to repair. This inevitably affects aesthetics to some degree, often requiring removal of the damaged crown and fabrication of a new veneer—a frustrating process. Primary causes include laboratory craftsmanship, clinical design, tooth preparation, and patient chewing habits.
If porcelain chipping occurs, consult the original dentist promptly. However, this isn't always feasible immediately. In such cases, carefully examine the affected crown: note the location, size, and shape of the chipped porcelain. If the chip is small, lacks sharp edges, and is difficult to spot via mirror or friend/family inspection, no immediate action may be needed.
If the chipped area is small and does not affect aesthetics, you may consider minor grinding adjustments before continuing use. However, if the chipping is noticeable, affects appearance, involves large-scale porcelain layer fractures, or creates sharp edges that could injure the tongue, lips, or cheek mucosa, prompt medical attention is necessary. Ideally, schedule a follow-up with the original dentist.
