Over time, kitchen cabinets at home tend to show signs of wear and may require refurbishment. So what are the methods for repainting old cabinets?
1. Determine if repainting with a different color is feasible
With industrial advancements, furniture materials now extend beyond solid wood. Common options include various wood-based panels, fire-retardant panels, and molded laminates. Note that fire-retardant panels and molded laminate furniture are unsuitable for repainting (mainly due to the complex repainting process).
2. Preparing for repainting
For solid wood furniture, purchase sandpaper in various grits. For non-solid wood furniture, additionally buy "putty" for leveling and filling. When selecting paint, note that different paint compositions may react chemically with each other. Choose a paint type compatible with your furniture.
3. Preparing Before Painting
After sanding, inspect the furniture for any uneven areas. If present, level them with putty and sand again until smooth. Protect surrounding surfaces and floors to prevent paint contamination. Wipe the furniture with a damp cloth (minimizing moisture). Stir the paint thoroughly in the bucket using a small stick, keeping hand movements slow to prevent splashing.
4. Painting
Dip a paintbrush into a small amount of paint and apply it to a previously painted surface of the furniture to check for any chemical reaction. If none occurs, proceed to the next step. Then use the brush to pull and spread the paint evenly. The paint layer should be neither too thin nor too thick. Excessively thick layers may cause water ripples or form small lumps where paint clumps together.
5. Protecting the Paint Layer Typically, after painting is complete, apply a clear varnish to protect the paint layer and enhance its shine.
