If someone is overly sharp and assertive, it may make the boss think you're all show and no substance, or even worry that shallow waters can't hold such a big fish. So, if you're an exceptionally talented individual, there's no need to hide minor personal flaws during job hunting. Deliberately or unintentionally, play up a bit of "dumbness" and act a little clumsy. This makes you seem more approachable and easier for others to accept.
Renowned American psychologist Nat Steinfinger conducted an experiment: he asked four job seekers to record their self-introductions while simultaneously boiling milk on a small stove.
The first candidate boasted excellent academic achievements and outstanding social skills. At the end of his report, he specifically mentioned that the milk had boiled perfectly.
The second applicant's report was nearly identical, but he ended by saying he accidentally knocked over the stove and burned the milk.
The third applicant differed from the first two. He admitted his academic performance was poor and his social skills lacking, but claimed he made the milk perfectly.
The fourth applicant's self-report mirrored the third's, and he also failed to make the milk properly.
Stefeng believed all job seekers could be categorized into four types: Type One: Perfectly flawless; Type Two: Nearly flawless; Type Three: Flawed with minor strengths; Type Four: Utterly without merit.
On the surface, it seems the first type should have a higher chance of success, but reality often favors the second type. After all, people are practical beings; everyone has flaws, big or small, and it's impossible to be flawless in every aspect. Moreover, if someone is overly sharp and assertive, bosses may perceive them as flashy but shallow, or deliberately pretentious. They might even worry that shallow waters can't hold such a big fish. Therefore, if you are an exceptionally talented individual, there's no need to hide minor flaws during job hunting. Deliberately or unintentionally, play up a bit of "dumbness" or feign clumsiness. This makes you seem more approachable and easier for others to accept.
