What are typical daily temperatures during the Jīngzhé solar term?
After Jīngzhé, warm and humid air masses become active in southern regions, causing temperatures to rise rapidly. Spring thunder is increasingly common south of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In northern and northwestern China, thunder typically doesn't occur until around the Qīngmíng solar term, except in a few years.
As the solar term with the fastest annual temperature rise, most northern regions of China see average temperatures climb above 0°C, except for Northeast and Northwest China which remain blanketed in winter's silver frost. Daily averages in North China range from 3-6°C, while Jiangnan generally exceeds 8°C. Southwest and South China may reach 10-15°C or higher.
Will it still get cold after Jingzhe?
Generally, as the Jingzhe solar term arrives, the weather gradually warms up and temperatures rise. Whether it will turn cold again depends on local conditions. Factors influencing the warming trend include the strength of cold air masses and cold waves, the influence of warm air currents, and Earth's rotation, the tilt of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and the angle of solar radiation.
However, it's important to understand that Jingzhe still falls within the coldest days of winter, and the weather remains quite chilly. Even though temperatures begin to rise during this period, it's still early spring weather characterized by sudden shifts between cold and warm. Avoid reducing your clothing too quickly to prevent catching a cold.
How long will the cold last after Jingzhe?
The Spring Equinox is one of the solar terms reflecting seasonal transitions. Ancient Chinese tradition marked the beginnings of the four seasons with Lichun (Start of Spring), Lixia (Start of Summer), Liqiu (Start of Autumn), and Lidong (Start of Winter). The Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox, and Winter Solstice mark the midpoints of each season. Thus, from the start of the Jīngzhé solar term until the Spring Equinox, sunlight directly illuminates the equator, resulting in equal day and night lengths worldwide. After this point, temperatures generally remain relatively mild. For agricultural activities, it is advisable to closely monitor weather forecasts.
Will it rain after Jīngzhé?
Rainfall increases.
Jingzhe marks the start of the Mao month in the sexagenary cycle; Mao, the second month of spring, corresponds to the Zhen hexagram. All things emerge from Zhen, symbolizing growth and vitality. Each of the twelve monthly pillars corresponds to a hexagram; the Mao month (encompassing both Jingzhe and Spring Equinox) aligns with the Dazhuang hexagram (Thunder Over Heaven). The Da Zhuang hexagram signifies the onset of thunder in the heavens.
During the Jīngzhé season, rainfall gradually increases and temperatures rise, bringing vibrant vitality to all things. This marks an ideal time for planting. Across China, as temperatures climb and daylight hours lengthen, spring plowing commences progressively from south to north.
