Eyelid surgery is now very common, especially inner canthoplasty. Generally, inner canthoplasty not only makes the eyes appear larger but also addresses epicanthal folds, enhancing the eyes' expressiveness!
What is epicanthal fold?
Epicanthal fold. Located at the inner corner of the eye, it forms a small skin fold where the upper eyelid extends slightly downward, covering the lacrimal papilla. Over 50% of Chinese people, and 40-90% of Japanese and Koreans have this fold. However, it is rare among Westerners (less than 3%).The epicanthal fold is a distinctive skin fold at the inner eye corner that partially or fully covers the lacrimal papilla, also known as the Mongolian fold. This fold is a common feature among East Asians, covering the skin at the inner corner of the eye (near the nose). Consequently, the inner eye corner appears covered, making the distance between the eyes seem wider than it actually is.
Epicanthoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that removes the inner corner skin fold covering the epicanthus, revealing the naturally hidden millimeters of the inner eye area. By releasing the skin fold connecting to the inner canthus, it creates a more open and larger-appearing eye.
Recommended for individuals with wide-set eyes or small eyes (narrow horizontal width), combining this procedure with double eyelid surgery can effectively elongate the perceived eye width, narrow the distance between the eyebrows, and create more captivating eyes.
Following canthoplasty, a faint scar may remain where the epicanthal fold once existed. Individuals with thick skin, acne-prone complexions, visible pores, or a tendency to scar may experience redness and swelling for the first one to two months, with the scar appearing reddish during this period. However, this discoloration is easily concealed with makeup. Thus, daily life faces minimal disruption, and over time, the scar becomes virtually undetectable.
Epicanthoplasty effectively enlarges the eyes. Generally, this procedure can be performed provided there are no systemic diseases, no eye infections, and the patient has strong physical resistance. The procedure employs a "Z" plasty technique to correct small eyes. Regarding the benefits of inner canthus surgery, it effectively improves mild to moderate epicanthal folds. The "Z" plasty extends the fold's margin, thereby addressing the issue of small eyes caused by this condition. The method is quick, convenient, and poses no significant health risks, so there's no need for excessive concern.
If you have epicanthal folds, consider inner canthus surgery to let your beauty shine!
