Honeysuckle, a common Chinese herb in daily life—do you know where it originates? How much do you understand about its uses and benefits? Only true enthusiasts may grasp its full potential, as many remain unfamiliar with this plant. Below is an introduction to honeysuckle, detailing its key functions and effects.
Fengqiu, China's renowned origin of honeysuckle, has obtained its Geographical Indication certification.
On January 23, 2003, after two days of rigorous review in Fengqiu County, officials from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine announced: "Fengqiu Honeysuckle (Yu Feng Brand) has successfully passed Geographical Indication certification!"This signifies that Fengqiu honeysuckle has obtained its passport to enter the international market.
Origin certification is an internationally recognized practice for legally protecting renowned, high-quality, and distinctive products, falling under the category of intellectual property protection. Following China's accession to the WTO, origin certification registration has developed rapidly. Nationwide, 89 products have obtained this certification, with Fengqiu honeysuckle being the 19th product in our province to receive origin certification registration.
By the end of last year, honeysuckle cultivation in Fengqiu County had expanded to over 100,000 mu (approximately 16,500 acres), accounting for 11% of the county's arable land. Total output reached 5.5 million kilograms, generating an annual output value of 140 million yuan. This has become a major pillar industry boosting farmers' incomes, and the county has been designated by the National Medical Products Administration as a national honeysuckle production base.Currently, over 80% of the county's honeysuckle is exported to nearly 20 countries and regions including Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan. The county has also become a key medicinal source base for renowned domestic enterprises such as Nanjing Jinling Pharmaceutical, Harbin No. 2 Pharmaceutical Factory, and Zhongsheng Pharmaceutical. Functions and Effects of Honeysuckle 3. Treats bloody diarrhea caused by heat toxins (stool mixed with mucus and blood). When heat toxins accumulate in the intestines and invade the blood, bloody diarrhea occurs. Honeysuckle cools the blood and clears heat toxins, thus treating bloody diarrhea. Clinically, it is often charred and combined with Scutellaria baicalensis, Coptis chinensis, Paeonia lactiflora, and Portulaca oleracea.
4. Honeysuckle, sweet and cold in nature with an aromatic scent, both clears and disperses exterior pathogens while resolving blood-level heat toxins. It is particularly essential for treating yang-type sores and ulcers. When paired with Forsythia, Arctium, Mentha, and Schizonepeta, it disperses exterior pathogens and reduces fever; combined with Rehmannia, Scrophularia, Forsythia, and Bamboo Leaf, it clears the blood and drains heat; when used with Viola, Chrysanthemum, and Taraxacum, it detoxifies and heals sores; When combined with Astragalus, Angelica, and Licorice, it supports toxin expulsion and abscess resolution; paired with Scutellaria, White Peony, and Licorice, it clears heat and treats dysentery. Honeysuckle, whose original plant name "Endurance Winter" (忍冬) stems from its winter-enduring foliage, was first documented in the Compendium of Famous Physicians' Prescriptions and classified as a superior herb. The Compendium of Materia Medica lists it under the herbaceous vines category.According to Li Shizhen's records: "When newly bloomed, both stamens and petals are pure white. After two or three days, they turn yellow. The intermingling of new and old blossoms, with yellow and white hues contrasting, gives rise to its name 'Honeysuckle Flower' (Jin Yin Hua)." Honeysuckle grows throughout China, with the finest quality originating from Miyi County, Henan Province—commercially known as "Mi Yin Hua." Shandong's "Dong Yin Hua" boasts larger yields and is also considered excellent. The flower buds are used medicinally. Premium quality, known as "尖子银花" (Jianzi Silver Flower), refers to small, yellowish-white buds with unopened tips. Flowers that have already bloomed, or those with darker colors due to improper harvesting or processing, are considered inferior.Characteristics of Honeysuckle The flower buds are rod-shaped, thicker at the top and tapering toward the base, slightly curved, measuring 2-3 cm in length. The upper diameter is 3 mm, while the lower diameter is 1.5 mm. The surface is yellowish-white or greenish-white, densely covered with short soft hairs.Occasionally leaf-like bracts are present. The calyx is green with a 5-lobed apex; the lobes are hairy, approximately 2 mm long. When open, the corolla is tubular with a bilabiate apex. There are 5 stamens attached to the tube wall, yellow in color; the pistil is solitary with a glabrous ovary. It has a fragrant aroma and a mildly bitter taste.
Distinguishing Quality
Honeysuckle possesses extensive medicinal and health benefits, with high societal demand. Its medicinal efficacy varies with quality. Below are guidelines for identifying superior honeysuckle.
Honeysuckle is the flower bud of Lonicera japonica (Caprifoliaceae), with a sweet and cold nature. It is produced throughout most of China, with Shandong having the highest yield. However, Henan produces the highest quality, considered the authentic origin. Honeysuckle clears heat and detoxifies, disperses wind-heat, cools blood and stops diarrhea, lowers blood pressure and reduces inflammation, and relieves sore throat and chest congestion.Henan honeysuckle is renowned for its superior quality and reasonable price. However, counterfeit products masquerading as Henan-sourced goods are prevalent in the market. It is advisable to purchase from reputable brands like Chen Zhiqian Honeysuckle. Honeysuckle is effective in treating febrile diseases, heat-toxin bloody diarrhea, boils, swellings, scrofula, and hemorrhoids. It has a fragrant aroma, mild taste, and slight bitterness. The name "Honeysuckle" originates from its flowers turning from white to yellow as they bloom.
Higher-grade Honeysuckle possesses greater medicinal efficacy and value, making identification essential. Let's examine how to distinguish different grades:
1. For treating wind-heat exogenous pathogens or early-stage warm diseases.Honeysuckle is sweet and cold in nature, capable of clearing heat from both the qi and blood levels. It also possesses a mild dispersing effect while clearing heat, making it suitable for treating exterior syndromes of wind-heat or the initial stage of warm diseases where exterior symptoms persist and interior heat is severe. It is often combined with forsythia, burdock seed, and mint in such applications.
2. For boils, abscesses, and throat swelling/pain.Honeysuckle possesses potent heat-clearing and toxin-resolving properties, making it a staple in surgical medicine. It is generally used for abscesses, boils, and swellings presenting with redness, swelling, heat, and pain. It is particularly suitable for conditions classified as "yang syndromes" in pattern differentiation. It can be decocted internally with dandelion, violets, forsythia, moutan bark, and red peony root, or fresh material can be crushed and applied externally.
National standards classify honeysuckle into four grades:
Grade 1: Dry material with buds shaped like a bouquet, thicker at the top and tapering downward, slightly curved. Surface is greenish-white. Corolla is thick and slightly hard, with a firm feel when grasped. Fragrant aroma, sweet taste with slight bitterness. Opened flowers, broken buds, and yellow streaks not exceeding 5%. Free of black streaks, black tips, branches, leaves, impurities, insect damage, or mold.
Grade 2: Similar to Grade 1, but open flowers not exceeding 5%. Broken buds and yellow streaks not exceeding 10%.
Grade 3: Dry goods. Buds are rod-shaped, thicker at the top and tapering toward the bottom, slightly curved. Surface is greenish-white or yellowish-white. Corolla is thick and hard, with a firm feel when grasped. Fragrant aroma, sweet taste with slight bitterness. No more than 30% open flowers or black tips. Free of branches, leaves, impurities, insect damage, or mold. Grade 4: Dry goods containing both flower buds and open flowers, with no distinction in color. Branches and leaves not exceeding 3%. Free of impurities, insect damage, or mold. Only by knowing how to identify honeysuckle can you ensure purchasing high-quality honeysuckle, thereby better treating illnesses.
Does honeysuckle have side effects?
Fresh honeysuckle flowers emit a delicate fragrance and contain abundant nectar. Rural children often collect the flowers to suck the sweet nectar. These fresh flowers are dried by sun-drying or processed using green tea methods to produce finished honeysuckle. Two types of honeysuckle tea are available in the market: one blends fresh honeysuckle with a small amount of green tea, processed using floral tea scenting techniques; the other combines oven-dried or sun-dried honeysuckle with green tea. The former boasts a rich floral aroma, primarily valued for its fragrance appreciation;while the latter has a milder floral aroma but preserves the medicinal properties of honeysuckle, maintaining its health benefits. Regarding side effects, honeysuckle tea is actually a health beverage suitable for all ages, particularly refreshing during summer.>Honeysuckle primarily clears heat and detoxifies. While honeysuckle itself has no side effects, the processing method matters. Some unscrupulous merchants add sulfur during processing to enhance color and appearance. If the natural color remains, it can be used cautiously in small amounts. However, if the processing involves flash-frying, it can be consumed safely without concern.
This concludes our introduction to honeysuckle and its benefits. We hope this information proves helpful. Wishing you good health and smooth sailing this winter.
