When choosing a delivery method, many expectant mothers consider water birth. So, under what conditions is water birth suitable? Conditions suitable for water birth: 1. Pregnancy has reached 38 weeks. 2. Cephalic presentation (no breech position).
3. Absence of any other risk factors.
4. Normal fetal heart rate.
5. No meconium staining.
6. Normal fetal size.
7. Prior screening must rule out all infectious diseases. Since birthing tubs aren't sterilized by high temperatures, we cannot take this risk.
8. Fetus is of average size, theoretically not exceeding 7 jin (approximately 3.5 kg). However, in practice, there is no strict weight restriction. For example, among five water births in Guangzhou, birth weights ranged from 5.9 to 8.1 jin (25.9 to 36.6 lbs).
9. The mother must have a sufficiently large pelvis and ideally be under 30 years old. However, the oldest mother to successfully deliver in water at Guangzhou No. 12 People's Hospital was 33 years old.
10. The mother must be in good health with no underlying medical conditions.Women with heart conditions, for instance, are not eligible for water birth.
11. The fetus must be healthy. If prenatal examinations reveal fetal abnormalities or malposition, water birth is not an option.
So, what precautions should be taken for water birth?
Precautions for Water Birth
Water birth is a form of vaginal delivery and carries the same risks as standard vaginal birth. Concerns often arise about increased risks of neonatal asphyxia or maternal infection during water birth. In reality, while the fetus moves within the amniotic fluid in the womb, it does not breathe, and its lungs remain unfolded. During water birth, the newborn emerges fully submerged in water, and its lungs are still unfolded. Therefore, there is no risk of water aspiration or increased neonatal asphyxia. The birthing water undergoes purification and disinfection, maintains a constant temperature, and circulates during labor to ensure cleanliness, posing no increased risk of maternal infection.
Water birth is not suitable for all mothers. Candidates must first meet the criteria for vaginal delivery, including full-term pregnancy, singleton cephalic presentation, estimated fetal weight ≤3500g, and voluntary choice of water birth.
Water birth is not suitable for everyone. Expectant mothers should choose carefully.
