I. Three Key Principles for Introducing Solid Foods:
1. Do not attempt to introduce solid foods to infants under 1 month old.
2. Generally, infants around 4 months old can gradually begin solid food introduction.
3. While introducing solid foods, continue to prioritize breastfeeding and formula feeding.
3. Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding alongside solid foods.
II. Follow these principles when introducing solids:
1. Start with rice cereal and prioritize hypoallergenic foods.
2. Progress from smooth to chunky textures.
3. Increase portion sizes gradually.
4. Expand from single to diverse food varieties.
During feeding, use a small spoon whenever possible. This allows for gradual nutrient introduction while appropriately training swallowing and chewing skills. Continue offering familiar complementary foods, as babies rarely have absolute food aversions—only preferences based on habit. Ensure the child is in good health before introducing new foods. If the child is unwell or has a poor appetite, it is better to pause solid food introduction.
Furthermore, new foods should be as mildly flavored as possible. Infants are not sensitive to taste. Parents need not add MSG, but a small amount of salt is acceptable. However, if parents find the taste too bland and wish to add more salt, the flavor may already be too salty for the baby.
