People often say, "Spring brings drowsiness, autumn brings lethargy, and summer brings naps." How can we alleviate these symptoms and shift from sleepiness to a state of mental clarity and sharp thinking? In fact, the human body has two "awakening points": the Taiyang (Sun) point and the Fengchi (Wind Pool) point. When feeling drowsy in summer, massaging these points with your fingers or applying Tiger Balm to them can have a refreshing effect.
Temple Point (Taiyang)
Located in the hollow behind the eyebrow (see Figure 1). To stimulate this point, use your thumb to push straight backward from front to back, known as "pushing the temple." Alternatively, use the middle fingers of both hands to massage the point, termed "rubbing the temple" or "circulating the temple." Rubbing toward the eye is a tonifying method, while rubbing toward the ear is a dispersing method. Perform 30–50 repetitions. The Taiyang point belongs to the Extra Meridian Points. Conditions treated here often involve Yang excess patterns, so the dispersing method is commonly used clinically. It helps disperse stagnant heat, refresh the mind, and improve vision. The tonifying method strengthens tendons and replenishes deficiency. During summer drowsiness, the dispersing method is recommended.
Fengchi Point
Located at the base of the skull (as shown in Figure 2), in the depression between the two large neck muscles, approximately level with the earlobe. This point belongs to the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. It clears the mind, calms wind, sharpens hearing, and improves vision. It is used to treat symptoms like lethargy and dizziness.Modern medical research confirms that Fengchi improves cerebral ischemia and hypoxia. Consequently, it is the most frequently recommended point for treating and preventing cerebral infarction. Apply pressure with both thumbs, massaging 30–50 times per session. Optimal results occur when a sensation of soreness and distension is felt. For quicker relief, apply Tiger Balm to the point for immediate effects. Combining this with the Taiyang point enhances efficacy.
