Everyone experiences hiccups occasionally, but frequent hiccups are not normal. Occasional hiccups after dinner are generally within the normal range, while persistent hiccups are likely caused by underlying issues. Similarly, it's important to address them with scientific methods. Since few people seek medication for this issue, some simple home remedies can be quite effective.
While the potential harm of hiccups remains debatable, their impact on daily life is significant. They can cause considerable embarrassment in social and professional settings. Frequent hiccups not only disrupt work but also distract individuals, leading to reduced productivity.
Between our chest and abdominal cavities lies a thick, hat-shaped muscular membrane called the diaphragm, which separates these spaces. Like other organs, the diaphragm has its own nerve supply and blood vessels.When stimuli triggering hiccups reach the brain, it sends signals causing the diaphragm to undergo paroxysmal, spasmodic contractions, resulting in hiccups.
Persistent or intractable hiccups often stem from emergencies like encephalopathy, uremia, or diabetic ketoacidosis.Numerous severe illnesses can also trigger persistent hiccups. Notably, persistent hiccups in critically ill patients often indicate a poor prognosis. Treatment for hiccups should first address the underlying condition causing them, followed by symptomatic management. Below are some simple and practical methods that can interrupt the neural reflex and stop hiccups.
1. Distract the individual to alleviate tension and eliminate adverse stimuli.
2. Take a deep breath, hold it for as long as possible, then exhale. Repeat several times.
3. Drink warm water in large sips, swallowing gradually.
4. Wash hands thoroughly, insert the index finger into the mouth, and gently stimulate the pharynx.
5. Inhale a mixture of 90% oxygen and 10% carbon dioxide from a plastic bag.
6. Chew and swallow ginger slices.
7. Wash raw leeks, extract the juice, and drink it.
8. Take 20 persimmon calyxes (the stem end of fresh or dried persimmons) each time. Boil them in water to make 100 ml, and drink it in two doses of 50 ml each. You may also add leek seeds to the decoction as needed.
