Traditional Chinese Medicine Massage Therapy for Stiff Neck
Stiff neck, also known medically as cervical sprain, primarily manifests as acute cervical muscle spasms forcing the neck into a fixed position with limited mobility. Mild cases may resolve within a week, though pain can radiate to the head and upper limbs. Persistent symptoms lasting weeks or recurrent episodes often signal early cervical spondylosis.
Etiology and Pathogenesis
(1) Muscle Injury from Massage:Improper sleeping posture at night, or an unsuitable pillow (too high or too low), can cause muscles to remain in an extended state for prolonged periods. This static strain leads to muscle edema (affecting muscles like the sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, and levator scapulae) or injury when neck muscles relax completely during sleep and then strain unevenly during movement.
⑵ Exposure to wind and cold: This can cause stagnation of qi and blood in the neck and back, obstructing tendons and meridians, leading to stiffness, pain, and restricted movement.
Advantages of Massage
Massage offers numerous benefits and is easy to learn. It is simple to perform, economical, and practical, serving as an alternative to medication. For instance, massage can invigorate some patients, acting as a stimulant, while calming others, functioning as a sedative.
As massage promotes circulation and metabolism, it is relatively safe and reliable for patients with chronic conditions or severe physical weakness. For children who cannot take medication, massage can strengthen their constitution and serve as preventive healthcare. For certain complex diseases, it can also be combined with acupuncture and medication. However, for acute or high-fever infectious diseases, or conditions involving organ lesions such as typhoid fever, pneumonia, or tuberculosis, massage can only serve as an adjunct therapy.
In cases of tumors, acute suppurative appendicitis, intestinal perforation, or cholecystitis caused by biliary ascariasis—where the onset is sudden and severe—immediate transfer to hospital emergency care is essential. Under no circumstances should massage be used, as it may delay critical treatment. For married women experiencing sudden severe lower abdominal pain after approximately two months of amenorrhea, prompt hospital admission is essential to rule out ectopic pregnancy or other acute conditions. Delay is unacceptable.
