Dodder seed is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb known for nourishing the liver and kidneys, stabilizing pregnancy, and improving vision. However, commercially available dodder seeds often contain high levels of impurities, and adulteration is common—sometimes intentional. How can you distinguish genuine dodder seeds? Below is a detailed guide on identifying high-quality dodder seeds.
Dodder seed possesses the efficacy of nourishing the liver and kidneys, consolidating essence and reducing urination, stabilizing pregnancy and improving vision, and stopping diarrhea. In clinical applications, it is a relatively commonly used Chinese medicinal herb. During pharmaceutical supervision and testing, the author discovered that dodder seed often contains a high proportion of impurities, and this is quite common. Some cases involve deliberate adulteration. To increase weight, adulterants like cement particles, sand grains, or soil clumps—resembling dodder seeds in shape, size, and color—are added to illegally profit. Dodder seeds are spherical or oval, approximately 1mm in diameter, and minuscule, making them difficult to identify visually. Due to limited resources, some grassroots hospitals and pharmacies struggle to detect adulterated dodder seeds. The author recommends the following simple identification methods during inspection:
How to identify dodder seeds: What constitutes high-quality dodder seeds?
Color identification:
Pure dodder seeds exhibit a grayish-brown or yellowish-brown hue with a smooth surface; adulterated seeds display an earthy color with a dull appearance.
Friction Test:
Place a small amount of dodder seeds in the palm of one hand. Use the thumb of the other hand to vigorously rub and twist them. Genuine dodder seeds are firm and resistant to crushing. If soil particles appear in the palm, it indicates contamination with soil clumps.
Soaking Method:
Place a small amount of dodder seeds in a transparent glass container and soak for a period. Dodder seeds absorb water and swell in volume. If mixed with cement particles, sand grains, or mud clumps, these will sink to the bottom of the container. Cement particles and sand grains will not swell, while mud clumps will quickly dissolve and cause the liquid to become cloudy.
Boiling Test:
After steeping a small amount in boiling water, the surface should become sticky. When heated until the seed coat cracks, revealing a yellowish-white, tendril-like embryo resembling spun silk, it is genuine.Indications: Impotence, seminal emission, residual urine after urination, enuresis, frequent urination, soreness in the lower back and knees, blurred vision, tinnitus, fetal leakage due to kidney deficiency, fetal restlessness, fetal leakage due to spleen-kidney deficiency, diarrhea due to spleen-kidney deficiency. Topically for vitiligo. Sift out impurities and debris from the raw herb, remove foreign matter, and sun-dry.
