Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculation:
Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m) ÷ Height (m)
A result between 18.5 and 23.9 is considered healthy (not applicable for children, adolescents, pregnant women, or the elderly).
Below 18.5 indicates underweight; above 24 indicates overweight.
Excessive weight poses numerous health risks:
1. Heart disease.
Obesity directly contributes to heart disease. Even obese individuals with low cholesterol face significantly higher heart disease risk than average, as fat deposits adhere to blood vessel walls. Excess fat deprives blood of oxygen, thickens its consistency, and slows circulation. In severely obese individuals, the heart may enlarge and weaken from overwork, potentially leading to congestive heart failure. 2. Diabetes. Excessive weight can disrupt the endocrine system. Obese individuals often face increased risks of diabetes and hyperlipidemia, which disturb the body's hormonal balance.Excess fat cells demand increased insulin secretion from the pancreas to convert blood sugar into energy. When the pancreas becomes overburdened, its function weakens, leading to elevated blood sugar levels that cannot be fully utilized and are excreted. However, as weight decreases and bodily functions recover, diabetes symptoms gradually subside.
3. Liver and Gallbladder Diseases.
Obesity can also trigger liver and gallbladder disorders, most notably fatty liver disease. In obese individuals, fat accumulates around the liver, gradually impairing its function and causing damage. Excess weight also increases the incidence of cholecystitis compared to normal weight individuals, and in severe cases, may lead to gallstones.
How to Lose Weight When Overweight
1. Control and Improve Dietary Habits
To lose weight and burn calories effectively, dietary control is essential. A long-term diet high in sugar and calories, combined with a fondness for snacks, beer, and sugary drinks, leads to excessive energy intake and obesity.
Reasonably controlling your diet effectively manages calorie intake. Simply starving yourself won't yield good results. Going hungry daily is unbearable, leading many to either quit midway or binge after losing weight, causing weight fluctuations.
Even if weight is lost, dieting can impair bodily functions, making one more susceptible to other illnesses. A reasonable and scientific approach to dietary control is recommended.
2. Get Moving
Exercise is the most effective way to burn calories. Combined with dietary adjustments, daily physical activity helps shed pounds by expending energy. Running, swimming, hiking, and similar activities are excellent for calorie burning. Prioritize moderate exercise to avoid injury from overexertion.
