Dementia in the elderly is broadly categorized into two types: one is vascular dementia. This type is often caused by vascular lesions, and most symptoms can be improved with medication. The other is degenerative dementia caused by the deterioration of brain nerve cells. Medically known as Alzheimer's disease, there is currently no specific cure for this condition. However, prevention is possible before brain nerve cells begin to deteriorate.Several simple yet effective exercises can delay neuronal hardening and help prevent Alzheimer's-type dementia: 1. Take a brisk one-hour walk daily in the fresh air, both in the morning and evening: Brisk walking exercises the tense muscles below the waist, increases oxygen intake, and helps stimulate brain cells to prevent degeneration.
2. Regularly perform finger-based mental exercises: Engaging in detailed activities with all ten fingertips—such as crafts, carving, drafting, paper cutting, typing, or playing musical instruments with fingers—expands the brain's blood flow, promotes circulation, and helps keep the brain active, preventing dementia.
3. Regularly rotate steel balls or walnuts with your fingers, or perform fist-clenching and unclenching exercises with both hands.
4. Perform head and neck rotation exercises: Slowly rotate your head and neck 100 times from left to right, then 100 times from right to left. This simple method can be done anytime, anywhere, with remarkable results.
