Dental misalignment is a significant concern for many, affecting both appearance and normal dental function. Many patients with dental malocclusion consider orthodontic treatment. However, orthodontic correction has optimal timing windows. Only undergoing treatment during these periods can achieve the best results. Below, we explore the four optimal times for orthodontic correction!
The best ages for dental correction generally fall into the following categories:
1.Primary Dentition Period
Early intervention is recommended for misaligned primary teeth, underbites (prognathism), or open bites. Treatment typically occurs between ages 3-6, when permanent teeth have not yet erupted and primary tooth roots remain stable. Removable orthodontic appliances can be used for correction, with treatment lasting approximately 6 months.Delaying treatment during this rapid growth phase may exacerbate malocclusions.
2. Mixed Dentition Period
Spanning roughly ages 7-11, this stage sees the emergence of permanent teeth. With rapid dental growth and unstable occlusion, it represents a peak period for orthodontic issues.
3. Permanent Dentition Period
All baby teeth have been replaced. The eruption of second and third molars marks another rapid growth phase, typically occurring between ages 12 and 18. Dental malocclusions are more clearly diagnosed during this stage. Orthodontic treatment initiated during this rapid growth period yields faster results with stable outcomes.
4. Adult Stage
This refers to individuals over 18 years old with fully stabilized permanent dentition. Since facial and skeletal structures are largely fixed in adults, comprehensive orthodontic treatment faces greater limitations. Functional appliances commonly used for pediatric orthodontics generally yield less than ideal results when applied to adults.
The optimal periods for orthodontic treatment are primarily four stages: the deciduous dentition stage, the mixed dentition stage, the permanent dentition stage, and adulthood. If you wish to undergo orthodontic treatment, it is recommended to do so during one of these four stages. If you remain uncertain about the specific timing for your treatment, it is advisable to consult a dentist at a dental hospital. After examining your dental condition, the dentist will provide you with a specific recommendation.
