Teeth play a vital role in our lives but are also prone to issues, leading to increasing demand for orthodontic treatment. With various braces available, what are the advantages and disadvantages of common types?
Metal Brackets with Edgewise Archwires
Advantages: Lower bonding requirements than straight-wire systems. However, the "Miracle" technique and Tweed technique often utilize them to address complex cases, effectively managing various challenging orthodontic scenarios.
Disadvantages: Requires intricate tooth adjustments and extensive archwire bending, making them cumbersome for practitioners. Metal brackets are also less aesthetically pleasing.
This significantly saves time for both the orthodontist and the patient. It also reduces the technical demands on the orthodontist for wire bending, enabling most patients to achieve satisfactory results regardless of the clinician's wire-bending skill level. It can be considered an upgraded version of the edgewise bracket system and is currently the mainstream orthodontic appliance.
Disadvantages: Higher demands on the orthodontist for bracket bonding. Metal brackets are not aesthetically pleasing.
Self-ligating brackets
Advantages: Achieve arch expansion faster than straight-wire or rectangular-wire brackets. Lower friction reduces ligature-related issues like wire irritation. Shorter adjustment times during follow-ups. Apply gentler forces, promoting root preservation.
Disadvantages: Often insufficient friction for closing diastemas, with slightly weaker clamping force. Wires may shift within brackets, causing mouth irritation. Higher cost; replacing lost brackets is expensive.
Lingual Brackets
Advantages: Bonded to the tongue side, offering excellent aesthetics.
