Sleep disorders, a problem troubling many modern people, are not merely issues with sleep itself. Behind sleep disorders often lie underlying mental or physical illnesses.Analysis of sleep disorder patients treated at Guangdong Sanjiu Brain Hospital's Sleep Treatment Center over the past year reveals the following causes: anxiety and depression account for approximately 53%, sleep apnea syndrome for about 20%, schizophrenia for roughly 10%, organic brain disorders for about 10%, and other conditions for approximately 7%.Director Guo Shenchang of the hospital's Sleep Treatment Center emphasized that sleep is an essential physiological function vital to sustaining human life. Sleep disorders arise from multiple factors, primarily manifesting as abnormal sleep duration or unusual behaviors during sleep."Modern individuals face intense work demands, psychological stress, and strained interpersonal relationships, making difficulty falling asleep or waking too early commonplace. However, if insomnia persists for over two months, a medical examination is warranted, as it may indicate underlying mental or physical health issues.Additionally, symptoms like snoring during sleep, chest tightness in the elderly, night terrors in children, and teeth grinding should be taken seriously. Timely medical consultation is crucial. Through sleep monitoring and clinical diagnosis, the true causes of sleep disorders can be identified early."
Director Guo Shenchang emphasized that prolonged sleep disorders without intervention can lead to brain hypoxia, memory decline, and even brain atrophy. He specifically noted that sleep disorders are not exclusive to adults; among his patients, approximately 4% are children with sleep disorders. "Pediatric sleep disorders are associated with conditions like obesity, asthma, and recurrent respiratory infections. Primary manifestations include frequent snoring, throat choking sounds, mouth breathing, sleep apnea, teeth grinding, sleep talking, and sleepwalking."Editor's Pick: Chronic insomnia and headaches may signal depression! "Many depression patients seek medical help due to sleeplessness, headaches, dizziness, and general discomfort. The most common symptoms we see clinically are headaches, dizziness, and insomnia. Among patients visiting our department for headaches, one-third experience chronic dizziness caused by depression, anxiety, or mental disorders,"Professor Li Yansheng, Director of Neurology at Renji Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, stated.
Sunlight exposure affects mood: Insufficient spring sunlight may lead to depression
During winter and spring, especially rainy spring days, many unconsciously develop depressive moods—feeling inexplicably irritable, low in spirits, sluggish at work, and struggling to find interest in anything. Some habitually complain: "It's all because of this damn weather!" While this may sound illogical, psychological experts confirm that poor moods are indeed significantly linked to weather conditions.
