During preconception checkups, many couples preparing for pregnancy find the test results confusing. Technical jargon and unfamiliar terms often baffle newcomers to fertility planning.
What is herpes virus IgM?
Prenatal checkups typically include viral and toxoplasmosis screenings, generally covering these pathogens: Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus type I, herpes simplex virus type II, and coxsackievirus. Each test detects both IgM and IgG antibodies.
Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 belong to the α subfamily and remain dormant within nerve cells.
Herpes simplex virus is spelled "herpessimplevirus" in English, commonly abbreviated as HSV. It has a high infection rate among the population and is widely present as a latent infection.Herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1) is typically transmitted through oral contact, contaminated hands, or respiratory droplets, while herpes simplex virus type II (HSV-2) is primarily spread through sexual contact.
HSV can infect through the placenta, affecting embryonic cell mitosis and increasing the risk of miscarriage, fetal malformations, intellectual disability, and other congenital disorders.Approximately 40–60% of newborns may become infected while passing through an HSV-2-infected birth canal, presenting with high fever, respiratory distress, and central nervous system lesions. Among these infected infants, 60–70% may die, and survivors may experience sequelae in up to 95% of cases.
Clearly, the herpes simplex virus is far from "simple"—it poses immense harm!
IgM stands for Immunoglobulin M (IgM).Humans possess five types of immunoglobulins: IgA, IgG, IgD, IgE, and IgM. Each has a distinct structure. During viral infection, IgM appears first but persists only briefly, serving as an indicator of recent infection.
What does a weak positive result for HSV IgM mean?
What does a weak positive HSV IgM test indicate? In viral and toxoplasma screening, both IgM and IgG antibodies are typically tested simultaneously.
IgM is the earliest immunoglobulin produced by the body upon infection and is often used as an indicator for early-stage infection.
IgG develops later and is generally used to indicate late-stage or past infection.
Therefore, a weak positive HSV IgM result indicates you currently have an active infection.
What should you do if your HSV IgM test is weakly positive?
Although IgM antibodies are often used as early diagnostic markers for many infectious diseases, in HSV infections, recurrent infections can repeatedly trigger IgM production, diminishing its value for initial early diagnosis. Therefore, it is advisable to revisit the hospital for several follow-up tests.Of course, for safety, it's best to undergo treatment before trying to conceive. Wait until the IgM turns negative and IgG (protective antibodies) appear before becoming pregnant. What is fetal transposition of the great arteries? There are two types of transposition: Corrected transposition occurs when the great arteries are connected to the wrong ventricles, combined with incorrect atrioventricular connections. The other is complete transposition of the great arteries, a congenital heart defect where the aorta originates entirely or mostly from the right ventricle, while the pulmonary artery originates entirely or mostly from the left ventricle. Fetal transposition of the great arteries is a severe congenital heart defect. Causes include genetics, viral infections, environmental pollution, and advanced maternal age.
A weakly positive antibody test indicates a past infection. However, this test alone cannot determine whether the fetus is affected. A comprehensive analysis incorporating other prenatal screening results is necessary for a definitive conclusion. Therefore, it is advisable to undergo further detailed examinations at the hospital and follow your doctor's recommendations.
