The Eight Characters of Birth, abbreviated as Ba Zi, refers to the stem-branch calendar date at a person's birth. It consists of the stem-branch combinations for the year, month, day, and hour—four pillars with two characters each, totaling eight characters. Ba Zi holds significant importance in Han Chinese folk beliefs, where ancient astrologers used it to predict the fortune and misfortune of an individual's life. The art of Ba Zi prediction evolved through practice: from Li Xuzhong's Three Pillars to Xu Ziping's Four Pillars, and later to the Four Pillars Sun Law and Moon Law. Each step forward reflects the diligent contributions of scholars and practitioners across generations.
To obtain an accurate birth time, ancient Han Chinese believed sundials provided the most precise measurement during daylight hours. Clock time represents artificial mean time and regional standard time. True astronomical birth time requires calculating the "true solar time difference" based on solar terms (solar ecliptic longitude) and the "local longitude time difference" based on the birthplace.
Almanacs typically list the stem-branch combinations for the year and day, while the heavenly stems for months and hours can be deduced from the year and day stems using mnemonic formulas.
Calculation Methodology
Derive the month's stem-branch from the year's heavenly stem using the Year-to-Month Conversion Chart (see Figure 1).If the year stem is Jia or Ji, the stem-branch of the first month is Bing Yin; if the year stem is Yi or Geng, the stem-branch of the first month is Wu Yin; if the year stem is Bing or Xin, the stem-branch of the first month is Geng Yin; if the year stem is Ding or Ren, the stem-branch of the first month is Ren Yin;If the year stem is Wu or Gui, the stem-branch of the first month is Jia Yin.

Yin Hour: 3:00 AM – 4:59 AM
Mao Hour: 5:00 AM – 6:59 AM
Chen Hour: 7:00 AM – 8:59 AM
Si Hour: 9:00 AM –10:59 AM
Hour of the Horse: 11:00 AM–12:59 PM
Hour of the Goat: 1:00 PM–2:59 PM
Hour of the Monkey: 3:00 PM–4:59 PM
You Hour: 5:00 PM – 6:59 PM
Xu Hour: 7:00 PM – 8:59 PM
Hai Hour: 9:00 PM – 10:59 PM
Refer to the second chart, "Day-to-Hour Correspondence Table," to derive the hour's stem-branch from the day's heavenly stem.
If the Day Stem is Jia or Ji, the Day-Hour Stem-Branch is Jia Zi; if the Day Stem is Yi or Geng, it is Bing Zi; if the Day Stem is Bing or Xin, it is Wu Zi; if the Day Stem is Ding or Ren, it is Geng Zi; if the Day Stem is Wu or Gui, it is Ren Zi.
How to Name Based on the Eight Characters of Birth
The process of naming based on the Eight Characters of Birth may seem complex, but it is not particularly difficult to understand.Traditional onomastics holds that "balance is paramount" in the Eight Characters of Birth. This means that achieving "balance" in the Eight Characters is considered optimal from a metaphysical perspective. If any element within the Five Elements is excessively strong or weak, it disrupts equilibrium and consequently impacts one's destiny. However, truly balanced Eight Characters are rare. Therefore, by understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the Five Elements within the Eight Characters, one can compensate through the attributes and stroke counts of a name to achieve the ideal state of "balance."Below are the specific methods and steps for naming based on the Eight Characters of Birth.
How to Name Based on the Eight Characters of Birth
Method/Steps
Calculate the Eight Characters of Birth based on the birth date: Using the year, month, day, and hour of the baby's birth, the Eight Characters of Birth can be calculated. For details, refer to What is Naming Based on the Eight Characters of Birth.
For example, a baby born on March 25, 2010, at 00:00 (the 10th day of the 2nd lunar month in the Gengyin year, Zi hour) has the following Ba Zi: Gengyin, Jimao, Jiaxu, Jiazi. If you find the calculation too difficult, free Ba Zi Five Elements query software can be used.
Determining the Five Elements from the Ba Zi: The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches in the Ba Zi correspond to the five elements. For instance, the Heavenly Stems Jia and Yi, and the Earthly Branches Yin and Mao, belong to the Wood element. Similarly, the Heavenly Stems Bing and Ding, and the Earthly Branches Si and Wu, belong to the Fire element.
Following this pattern, the baby's Five Elements can be deduced as: Metal, Wood, Earth, Wood, Earth, Wood, Earth, Water(Geng Yin, Ji Mao, Jia Xu, Jia Zi). Refer to the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches Five Elements Correspondence Chart.Deficiencies and weaknesses require supplementation, while excessively strong elements need to be restrained.
Analyzing this baby's BaZi Five Elements: Metal-Wood-Wood-Wood-Wood-Wood-Water (4 Wood, 0 Fire, 2 Earth, 1 Metal, 1 Water), it is evident that Wood is strong and Fire is deficient. Therefore, it can be determined that this baby's BaZi favors "Fire." When naming, it is best to use characters with the Five Elements attribute of "Fire."
Selecting suitable characters based on Five Elements preferences: Next, find characters with appropriate stroke counts and attributes aligned with the Five Elements preferences, considering numerological balance.
For example: Since the baby's BaZi favors "Fire," suitable characters should have the Fire attribute, such as: 炎 (Yan), 煊 (Xuan), 烽 (Feng), 晗 (Han), 焓 (Huan), 炜 (Wei), 炀 (Yang), 煜 (Yu), etc.
It's important to note that relying solely on radicals to determine Five Elements attributes may not be entirely accurate. Many characters without the fire radical still belong to the Fire element, such as: 婻 (nán), 晶 (jīng), 能 (néng), 晴 (qíng), 冽 (liè), 犂 (lí), 昱 (yù), 珥 (ěr), etc.
