II. Positions to Alleviate Labor Pain
1. During contractions, the mother stands with feet apart, wrapping her arms around her partner's or husband's neck. She rests her head on their shoulder and leans her body against them. The partner or husband supports her weight, wrapping their arms around her waist and gently massaging her lower back.
2. During contractions, the mother stands with feet apart, leaning her back against her partner's chest, resting her head on their shoulder, and supporting her lower abdomen with both hands. The partner wraps their arms around the mother's abdomen, encouraging her while gently swaying or walking together.
3. Place several soft cushions on the bed or floor. The mother kneels on all fours on the cushions. The partner or husband stands beside the bed, continuously stroking her back with both hands. This alleviates back pain caused by labor contractions, providing comfort—especially when the baby's face is positioned toward the mother's abdomen.
4. Find a comfortable, soft chair. Have the mother sit facing the back of the chair, leaning her chest and abdomen against the padded backrest with her head resting relaxed upon it. 7. As labor transitions from the first stage to the second stage, the mother can assume a squatting position on the bed. The husband or other support person stands on either side of the bed. The mother rests her arms on the support person's shoulders and neck. This supported kneeling position can provide comfort and the baby's weight can help facilitate pelvic expansion.
8. If needed, between contractions, the mother can sit upright on the bed with her back against a padded headboard or pillows, knees bent, and hands resting loosely on her knees. This position helps relax the abdomen and lower back while encouraging the baby's head to advance toward the cervix, making contractions more effective.
