Formula Name: Scutellaria-Coptis Intestinal Cleansing Decoction
Case: Liu, male, 23 years old. Due to irregular diet, he suddenly developed diarrhea, chest and epigastric heat, dry mouth with thirst, shortness of breath with sweating, red tongue with yellow coating, and rapid pulse. After taking fluoroquinolone and berberine for 3 days with no significant effect,Acute enteritis suspected; prescribed Scutellaria-Coptis Intestinal Cleansing Decoction.
Formula: Scutellaria baicalensis, Pueraria root, Aquilaria wood, Agastache herb each 10g; Coptis rhizome, Fried licorice root each 3g.
Administration: Decoct twice with water. Combine and mix decoctions evenly. Take in two divided doses.
Efficacy: Clears intestinal heat to stop diarrhea; resolves both exterior and interior patterns.
Indications: Acute enteritis, bacterial dysentery, typhoid fever, gastrointestinal-type colds, and other conditions characterized by unresolved exterior syndrome with severe interior heat. Note: For mild diarrhea, supplement with oral rehydration solution while taking this formula. Seek immediate medical attention if high fever persists or severe diarrhea occurs.For certain acute diarrhea cases (e.g., traveler's diarrhea, commonly known as "travel sickness") without pronounced heat symptoms, the proprietary Chinese medicine Chunyang Zhengqi Pills is more appropriate. This formula is contraindicated for chronic diarrhea caused by a deficient-cold constitution.
Effective Formula for Hair Loss
Formula Name: Hair Regrowth Decoction
Ingredients: 15g each of Raw Rehmannia Root, Prepared Rehmannia Root, Platycladus Leaf, Eucommia Bark, and Dipsacus Root; 20g Angelica Root; 21g Black Sesame Seeds; 25g Prepared Polygonum Multiflorum Root; 30g Clematis Root.
Method: Add the above herbs to an appropriate amount of water. Boil for 30 minutes, then simmer over low heat for 20 minutes. Repeat this process twice. Combine the filtered liquid (300 ml) and divide into three doses to be taken orally after meals. Continue for 20-30 doses.
Efficacy: Tonifies the kidneys, nourishes blood, promotes hair growth.
Indications: Hair loss due to deficiency of yin and blood.
Note: Hair loss is notoriously difficult to treat. The Hair Regrowth Decoction typically requires 30 consecutive doses to achieve satisfactory results. As the saying goes: "Yang deficiency is easy to treat, yin deficiency is hard to cure." Only with time can it be effective.
Modifications: For hair loss primarily due to liver-kidney yin deficiency with concomitant qi-blood stagnation and blood stasis, add 10g each of Carthamus tinctorius, Prunus persica kernel, and Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome, plus 15g Paeonia lactiflora root to activate blood circulation and remove stasis. For cases with wind-heat and blood dryness, add 10g each of Moutan bark, Cicada slough, Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome, and Saposhnikovia root,Cnidium monnieri and Phellodendron bark, each 15g, while increasing the dosage of raw and prepared Rehmannia root to nourish blood and moisten dryness. For any pattern of hair loss accompanied by skin itching, add Pollen, Phellodendron bark, and Kochia seed, each 10-15g; itching often subsides within 3-5 doses.
