Several days ago, a residential fire broke out on the 4th floor of Building 41 in Shipingqiao May Day New Village, Jiulongpo District, Chongqing. Firefighters responded urgently upon receiving the alarm and contained the blaze. No casualties were reported.
With rising temperatures, household electricity consumption increases, making summer a peak period for fires. Therefore, fire safety is crucial during this season. To prevent potential hazards, everyone should heighten fire safety awareness.
Don't be careless! These areas in your home are most prone to fires:
1. Household appliances
When using high-power appliances like televisions, irons, or hair dryers, remember to turn them off immediately after use. Unplugging them when not in use is the safest precaution.
2. Aging Electrical Wiring
Regularly inspect and replace aging wires, cables, and outdated equipment to prevent fires caused by deteriorated wiring or damage from frequent handling.
3. Unclosed Balcony Windows
Open balcony windows allow external ignition sources like fireworks or cigarette butts to ignite flammable materials.
4. Smoking in Bed or on Sofas
Many men habitually smoke at home, particularly while lying in bed before sleep or upon waking, or while napping on sofas. This behavior significantly increases fire risk.
5. Clutter in Home and Stairwells
Be mindful of clutter stored in homes and stairwells, as dry weather conditions can easily ignite fires. Store high-risk items according to safety regulations, and conduct regular inspections and cleanups.
How to Escape a High-Rise Fire
If a fire breaks out in a high-rise building, never jump from the window in panic. If an emergency refuge floor is available, proceed there first. If your floor is already on fire but the stairwell remains accessible and the flames are not overwhelming, cover yourself with water-soaked clothing or bedding and quickly descend the stairs or enter the evacuation stairwell to reach a safe area.
1. Residents on the second floor with no self-rescue options, facing severe smoke/fire threats and forced to jump: First throw quilts or similar items to the ground. Then grip the windowsill with both hands and slide down to minimize jump height. Aim for feet-first landing to reduce injury severity.
2. When life is severely threatened with no other escape options, create a makeshift rope by connecting strips of rope, clothing, belts, bedsheets, curtains, or quilt covers. Slide down to a floor not yet engulfed in flames, then break through a window to enter. Alternatively, use exterior building elements like downspouts or lightning rods to descend floor by floor to ground level or below the fire zone.
3. If unable to leave the room, first open windows to vent smoke. If fire is visible outside, immediately close doors and windows, draw curtains to block fire spread, and if possible, douse doors/windows with water to delay fire progression.
4. When escaping through hallways, crouch low, hug the wall, and keep your head as close to the floor as possible. If escaping with children, carry them rather than pulling them along. Cover your mouth with a wet towel to reduce exposure to smoke.
5. If stairwells are blocked or flames are intense, evacuate high-risk rooms and seek refuge in balconies, bathrooms, or toilets farther from the fire source. Close doors and windows behind you when leaving rooms to delay fire pursuit and gain more escape time.
