Currently, our marital and family system remains male-centered, with legal equality failing to translate into real-world equality. China has long held a tradition of valuing sons over daughters, viewing men as superior and women as subordinate appendages. This backward feudal mindset persists in some areas today. Many men see themselves as women's masters, while some women believe they must depend on men. This culture enables domestic violence.
Social Factors
1. Certain social discourses persist in promoting traditional gender roles, advocating that women should adhere to the "Three Obediences and Four Virtues" and dedicate themselves entirely to the family. Under the subtle influence of media, many women are beginning to adopt these outdated notions.
2. Lack of effective social intervention. The ancient Chinese saying "Even the most upright official finds it hard to judge family affairs" reflects the belief that domestic violence is a private matter—a family shame not to be aired publicly. This mindset has allowed abuse to escalate unchecked, leaving victims with nowhere to turn for help.
3. Mounting social pressures fuel growing emotional distress, leading some men to resort to domestic violence as a means of venting frustration.
Economic Factors
Women's lack of financial independence, relying entirely on men, creates severe imbalance in family dynamics, placing men in a position of complete dominance. Within this unhealthy relationship structure, women occupy a wholly disadvantaged and passive position. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in underdeveloped regions.
Legal Factors
Current Chinese laws and regulations exhibit certain shortcomings, primarily manifested in the absence of specialized legislation specifically targeting domestic violence.Certain provisions lack clear definitions and specific enforcement mechanisms, limiting their practical applicability.
Individual Factors
1. Lack of civic legal awareness. Both perpetrators and victims often fail to recognize domestic violence as a legal issue, mistakenly viewing it as a private matter beyond legal intervention.
2. Women's disadvantaged position. Currently, women remain in a weaker position than men in terms of economic resources, education, and physical strength. They require greater support from society and the law.
3. Issues inherent to the perpetrators themselves. Many abusers exhibit distinct personality flaws—violent temperaments, eccentric behavior, and poor self-control. In reality, most perpetrators of domestic violence are profoundly insecure individuals.
