Butter naturally softens at room temperature, softening faster at higher temperatures and spoiling more quickly. Generally:
At room temperature (around 20°C), it spoils within 2-3 days;
Refrigerated (2-8°C), it keeps for 6-12 months;
Frozen (below 0°C), it lasts 12-18 months;
How to Store Butter
Wrap in aluminum foil and refrigerate.
Aluminum foil blocks air exposure, preventing oxidation and spoilage. When using butter, avoid prolonged air contact to prevent oxidation. After cutting the desired amount, return the butter to the refrigerator.
How to select butter
Cut a piece off. If the outer color matches the inner color, it indicates freshness. If the outer layer is darker than the inside, the butter has oxidized. If still within the expiration date, seal it and freeze for 3-6 months before use.
Is animal butter or plant butter better?
Animal butter is superior.
Vegetable butter is chemically synthesized margarine, while animal butter is natural butter extracted from milk.
Vegetable butter is significantly cheaper than animal butter. It contains higher levels of trans fatty acids. Long-term consumption of foods processed with vegetable butter is detrimental to the cardiovascular system and may be carcinogenic. It is advisable to minimize intake of vegetable butter.
