Chicken is a common meat dish on our dining tables. Rich in high-quality protein and low in fat, its tender texture and delicious flavor make it widely beloved. Every part of the chicken can be cooked into a tasty dish. However, certain chicken parts pose significant safety risks and should be minimized or avoided altogether. So, which parts of the chicken should not be eaten?
Which Parts of the Chicken Should Not Be Eaten?
1. Chicken Heads
It's less commonly known that chicken heads are inedible. Yet, a folk saying warns: "A ten-year-old chicken's head is more toxic than arsenic." The older the chicken, the more toxic its head becomes. This is primarily because chickens ingest harmful heavy metals while foraging. These metals accumulate in brain tissue, with older chickens storing greater quantities and thus higher toxicity.
While enjoying the flavor of chicken heads, consumers also ingest heavy metal toxins. Excessive consumption may cause poisoning symptoms. Therefore, chicken heads should be eaten sparingly. Similarly, duck heads, goose heads, and other similar parts should also be consumed in moderation for the same reason.
2. Chicken Skin
The vast majority of fat in chickens is stored in the skin. The high caloric content of fat can adversely affect human health, and its fatty acid composition is also unsuitable for the human body. Additionally, chicken skin contains lymphatic tissue, which is not meant for consumption. Furthermore, chicken skin is prone to accumulating large numbers of parasites. If not thoroughly cleaned, it can easily cause harm to the body.
Particularly in roasted chicken, baking oxidizes the cholesterol in the skin, forming harmful cholesterol oxidation products. Improper temperature control may even generate carcinogens. Therefore, it's best to remove the skin when eating chicken and avoid using it in recipes.
Should chicken skin be removed before cooking? Actually, a thin membrane exists between the skin and meat. This membrane helps retain moisture while preventing fat from leaking out. Therefore, if necessary, skin should be removed only after cooking. This approach not only reduces fat intake but also preserves the meat's flavor.
Individuals with high blood lipid levels should strictly limit chicken skin consumption. Those with hyperlipidemia are often prone to hypertension. Chicken skin contains significant amounts of subcutaneous fat and sebum, making it essential for such patients to minimize intake. Regularly removing skin when eating chicken helps reduce the risk of hypertension-related complications.
3. Chicken Neck
This section contains minimal meat but a relatively high concentration of blood vessels and lymph nodes. Occasional consumption for indulgence is acceptable, but it's best to remove the skin beforehand. Lymph nodes and other detoxification glands are concentrated in the subcutaneous fat of the neck, which may contain toxins from the animal's body and hormones from feed.
Minimize consumption of chicken neck lymph nodes. If you must eat them, remove both the lymph nodes and skin beforehand. How to identify lymph nodes? They are easily distinguished as small granules or bumps beneath the skin. Thoroughly removing them before eating eliminates any issues.
4. Chicken Tail Tip
Also known as the chicken butt or tail tip, this refers to the fleshy, tender area at the upper end of the chicken's rear where tail feathers grow. This section is a concentrated site for lymph nodes. Macrophages within these lymph nodes can engulf bacteria, viruses, and even carcinogens, but they cannot break them down. Consequently, toxins accumulate within the tail tip.Over time, the tail tip becomes a reservoir for viruses and pathogens. Therefore, the chicken tail should not be consumed.The area around the chicken buttocks does indeed contain numerous lymph nodes and sebaceous glands, making consumption detrimental to health. Furthermore, this region consists almost entirely of fat, offering little nutritional benefit. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid eating it. However, many still crave the flavor of chicken buttocks. Experts suggest that if consumption is unavoidable, the two spherical sacs within the buttocks should be removed. What remains is primarily fat, which can be consumed in moderation.
