What about peanut shells? Many people discard them as waste after eating peanuts. However, peanut shells can be repurposed: buried in flower pots to enhance plant beauty, or processed in chemical plants to create exquisite furniture. There are numerous uses for peanut shells. Below are seven ways to utilize them:
Discarding large quantities of peanut shells is wasteful, as they serve seven major purposes.
1. Peanut shells aren't waste—they serve as an energy source, either burned alone or mixed with other solid fuels.
2. Starch extraction. Wash clean, mold-free peanut shells with water, dry them, then grind them in a crusher. Place the ground shells in a vat, stir, add water, and knead. Filter the pulp, squeezing out excess moisture.Place the paste in clean water to settle out impurities. Collect the sediment in cloth bags and hang to dry. Finally, dry thoroughly in an oven or under the sun to obtain starch.
3. Cultivating edible fungi. Crush clean peanut shells with a grinder, sterilize them, then pack into plastic bags for inoculating edible fungi like shiitake or oyster mushrooms. Typically, 100 kg of peanut shells yields about 100 kg of fresh mushrooms, offering substantial returns.
4. Medicinal applications. Compounds within peanut shells help lower blood pressure and reduce blood lipids.
5. As a soil amendment, applying crushed peanut shells (5 tons per hectare) to hard, compacted soil improves aeration, retains moisture, and adjusts soil structure. This creates optimal growing conditions for crops like peanuts, boosting yields—for instance, increasing peanut harvests by 580 kilograms per hectare.
6. Approximately 70% of peanut shells consist of cellulose, making them suitable feed for cattle and sheep to aid digestion and nutrient absorption. Conventional cattle feed costs around $200 per ton, while peanut shell-based feed costs only $60 per ton.
7. Fiberboard production. After chemical preservation treatment, peanut shells serve as primary raw material for manufacturing fiberboard. The resulting boards are durable and cost-effective.
These seven uses for peanut shells not only protect the environment but also promote resource conservation and recycling. Now that you know these benefits, remember not to discard peanut shells after eating peanuts!
