Huaniu apples are a specialty of Tianshui City, Gansu Province.
They refer to the superior varieties of the Marshal apple cultivar grown across most of the city, recognized as a Chinese National Geographical Indication Product. These apples feature fine, dense, crisp flesh with abundant juice, a distinctive flavor, rich aroma, excellent taste, and premium quality. Huaniu apples are acknowledged by many domestic and international experts and distributors as a world-renowned apple brand, on par with American Granny Smith and Japanese Fuji apples.
Why are they called Huaniu apples?
The origin is Huaniu Village.
In 1956, Huaniu Village in Nianshiliupu Township, Maiji District, Tianshui City introduced ten apple varieties—including Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Kōkō—from Xiongyue Town, Liaoning Province. Under technical guidance, all ten varieties were successfully cultivated. Among them, the Red Delicious stood out for its superior color, shape, and flavor, eventually giving the village its name.
How much does a pound of Huaniu apples cost?
Huaniu apples typically cost around ten yuan per pound.
The average fruit weighs approximately 260 grams, with soluble solids content ranging from 12.5% to 14%. The fruit features a conical shape, uniformly bright red or deep crimson in color, with a smooth, glossy skin. The shape is well-proportioned, with five prominent ridges.
