That's right—simmering pears with Sichuan pepper can soothe coughs. Many of us remember drinking our mothers' homemade rock sugar snow pears as children. Just a few bowls could miraculously ease cough symptoms.
So why does stewing pears with Sichuan peppercorns produce this cough-relieving effect?
Cough-Relieving Mechanism
Traditional medical theory classifies pears as a cold-natured food. Their sweet and sour taste is neutral, containing no toxic components while promoting fluid production, strengthening the spleen, harmonizing the stomach, and reducing nausea. Sichuan peppercorns, with their warm and pungent nature, can warm the middle burner, dispel cold, and enhance immunity.
When stewed together, the combined properties of these two ingredients target the lung and stomach meridians, effectively alleviating cough symptoms while also clearing heat and resolving phlegm.

Exogenous coughs are primarily categorized as wind-cold coughs and wind-heat coughs. Different types of coughs require distinct dietary remedies. Sichuan pepper stewed with pear is primarily used for wind-cold coughs.
For wind-cold colds, the treatment should focus on dispersing the exterior with pungent-warm methods. For wind-heat colds, the approach should involve dispersing the exterior with pungent-cool methods.
Steamed Pear with Sichuan Pepper Method
Take one pear, wash it, cut it horizontally, and scoop out the core. Place 20 Sichuan peppercorns and 2 rock sugar cubes inside. Reassemble the pear halves, place them in a bowl, and steam for about 30 minutes. One pear can be consumed in two servings.
Additionally, another effective remedy for wind-cold cough is garlic and rock sugar water.
Use 2-3 garlic cloves for children and 7-8 cloves for adults. Crush the garlic, add several pieces of rock sugar and a bowl of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer gently for several minutes until reduced to about half a bowl. Drink three times daily.
In fact, pears can be used not only for wind-cold coughs but also for wind-heat coughs.
