Plants are humanity's best friends. Flowers, trees, and shrubs in nature act as natural air purifiers. As living spaces expand and home environments improve, many nature lovers cultivate beautiful outdoor plants indoors. But did you know some vibrantly colored plants may be cancer "accomplices"?
Among the plants long regarded as "air purifiers," several harbor carcinogenic viruses, making them "invisible killers."Academician Zeng Yi from the Institute of Virology at the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine has researched the carcinogenic effects of substances in plants. Some plants contain "Epstein-Barr virus early antigen inducers," which can induce EB virus transformation of lymphocytes and promote tumor growth caused by tumor viruses or chemical carcinogens.Experiments have now confirmed that carcinogenic plants can induce nasopharyngeal cancer, brain tumors, and esophageal cancer. If such plants are grown indoors, prolonged inhalation of pollen, dust particles, and other substances may potentially trigger cancer.
It is not the case that keeping these plants will inevitably lead to cancer or brain tumors, as numerous factors contribute to cancer development. For most brain tumors, genetic predisposition forms the foundation, with EB virus playing a significant role in cancer onset, while environmental carcinogens and co-carcinogens act synergistically. For citizens unaware of their own genetic predisposition to cancer, it is advisable to avoid keeping these plants at home to prevent potential disease triggers.
Among the 52 virus-carrying plants listed by the Virus Disease Control Institute, most are found in landscaping nurseries and traditional Chinese medicine seedling farms. Plants commonly found in households include iron cactus (Euphorbia haworthi), variegated philodendron, iris, Chinese tallow tree, red-backed osmanthus, tung tree, and golden olive. Some homes may also have rare varieties like datura.
Plants like iron cactus, variegated rubber plant, and golden olive are readily available in urban flower markets. Their unique shapes, vibrant colors, and reasonable prices attract many buyers.Experts remind us that nature operates dialectically: the more beautiful and vibrant a plant appears, the more likely it may be toxic. Flower enthusiasts are advised to proactively "eliminate cancer risks" by avoiding cultivation of carcinogenic plants at home.
Plants naturally belong in their own habitats; it is human affection that relocates them indoors.Plants redirect their defenses against external threats to resist human care, thereby exposing humans to cancer risks. If you truly cherish them and cannot bear to discard them, relocate them outdoors and minimize close contact between children and the elderly. Protecting nature and caring for ourselves creates the best environment for peaceful coexistence.
