Massage Techniques for Relieving Menstrual Cramps
1. Percussion of the Lumbar-Sacral Region
Massage Method: Gently tap the lower back and sacral area with both fists using moderate force. Maintain an even pace, alternating sides at a frequency of 100 taps per minute until the area feels slightly warm.
Benefits: Traditional Chinese Medicine refers to menstruation as "Tian Gui," which essentially means kidney essence. Since the waist is the residence of the kidneys, tapping the lumbar-sacral region helps nourish the kidneys and replenish essence, thereby achieving pain relief and regulating menstruation.
2. Rubbing and Friction on the Lower Abdomen
Massage Method: Place both hands overlapping at the center of the lower abdomen. Perform slow, gentle rubbing motions at a frequency of about 10 times per minute until warmth is felt internally. After 5 minutes of rubbing, use both hands to perform unidirectional diagonal friction from the sides toward the front of the lower abdomen, moving toward the groin until penetrating warmth is achieved.

3. Pressing the Uterus Point
Massage Method: The Uterus Point is located in the lower abdomen, 4 cun below the navel and 3 cun lateral to the Zhongji point. Stimulating this point directly targets female reproductive health, promoting blood circulation, dispersing blood stasis, regulating qi, and relieving pain.
4. Rubbing the Tai Chong Point
Massage Method: Use the pad of your left thumb to knead the right Tai Chong point (located at the midpoint of the gap between the first metatarsal bones on the top of the foot). Apply pressure until a sensation of soreness and fullness is felt. After 1 minute, switch to the pad of your right thumb to knead the left Tai Chong point for 1 minute.
Benefits: Traditional Chinese Medicine holds that a robust Tai Chong pulse indicates regular menstruation. As the most crucial point on the Liver Meridian, Tai Chong effectively addresses menstrual irregularities. Women with dysmenorrhea often exhibit varying degrees of liver qi stagnation, leading to pain due to obstruction. Massaging this point helps regulate liver qi, promote circulation, and alleviate pain.
5. Pressing Zusanli (ST36)
Massage Method: Zusanli is located on the anterior lateral aspect of the lower leg, 3 cun below the lateral condyle of the knee, one finger-width lateral to the anterior tibial crest. Apply moderate pressure with the pad of your thumb to press and knead the Zusanli point until a sensation of soreness and distension is felt.For uterine cold-induced dysmenorrhea, moxibustion with a moxa stick is recommended.
Benefits: The common saying that "regularly pressing Zusanli is better than drinking chicken soup" is widely known. Especially for women with weak constitutions due to qi and blood deficiency, pressing Zusanli helps tonify qi and blood, warm the uterus, regulate menstruation, and relieve pain.Note: Self-massage for dysmenorrhea prevention should begin approximately one week before menstruation. Its therapeutic purpose is to unblock meridians, promote blood flow downward, and ensure smooth menstrual flow. Discontinue massage once menstruation begins, resuming treatment in the next cycle. All five methods shared above can alleviate menstrual cramps.
