Four-month-old Qiqi recently caught a cold, suffering from nasal congestion and runny nose. She makes snoring sounds while sleeping, and sometimes large clumps of dried mucus block her nostrils, making cleaning difficult. Seeing Qiqi uncomfortable makes her mother feel distressed too, unsure how to help. So what methods can relieve a baby's stuffy nose?
Why Do Babies Easily Develop Nasal Congestion?
Babies' nasal mucosa is thin and delicate. When they get sick or encounter external irritants, it can become congested, swollen, and produce secretions. Combined with their narrow nasal passages, even a small amount of mucus can cause blockage. Since babies breathe exclusively through their noses, any obstruction leads to noticeable snoring sounds.
During or after feeding, milk may flow back into the rear nasal passages, causing increased mucus production. If the room is overly warm with low humidity, this mucus can dry out, forming hard crusts that are even harder to clear.
3 Simple Tips to Relieve Baby's Stuffy Nose
A stuffy nose can affect a baby's breathing and sleep. How can we help relieve these symptoms? Experts advise parents to adopt different approaches based on the specific condition of the stuffy nose.
1. Stuffy Nose Without Runny Nose
If your baby only has a stuffy nose without noticeable runny nose symptoms, rub your hands together to warm them up, or use a hot water bottle or similar tool to warm your hands before gently covering your baby's head. You can also put a small hat on your baby. After a while, the stuffiness should improve.
2. Thickened nasal discharge forming crusts
If nasal discharge is thick or has hardened into crusts, spray the nasal passages with saline solution, breast milk, or a few drops of vegetable oil. This will soften secretions, allowing them to be expelled when the baby sneezes or drain naturally.Never use tools or fingers to pick your baby's nose, as this may injure the nasal mucosa and cause accidental harm.
3. Nasal congestion with runny nose
If your baby has nasal congestion accompanied by a runny nose, and the mucus inside the nasal passages cannot drain out, you can give your baby a steam bath for the nose.Soak a small towel in hot water, then wring out most of the moisture. Fold the towel and place it in front of the baby's nose. This allows steam to enter the nasal passages. After a few minutes, mucus will begin to flow. Use a nasal aspirator to gently suction each nostril 1-2 times.
Steam baths are relatively safe but should not be prolonged, ideally limited to 10-15 minutes per session. Crucially, avoid direct contact between hot water and the baby's skin to prevent burns. Humidifiers and spray bottles operate on the same principle as steam baths, though their effectiveness is slightly less pronounced.
When your baby has a stuffy nose, it's best to clear the blocked nostrils before feeding. During feeding, allow your baby to eat for a short while and then rest periodically to prevent prolonged complete blockage of the nose and mouth, which can interfere with normal breathing. If your baby's nasal congestion is severe, accompanied by difficulty breathing or rapid breathing, seek medical attention promptly.
