Many people, especially younger individuals, struggle with acne. Laser acne removal is becoming increasingly common. So, what methods are available for laser acne removal?
For many, acne persists from adolescence into middle age. It begins when sebum clogs pores, triggering inflammation. When the oil sac swells intensely, the acne may rupture, causing further inflammation. Surging hormones during adolescence can trigger this acne, leading to the formation of acne scars.
1. Light Therapy for Acne
Blue light therapy exploits bacteria's ability to produce a substance called porphyrin in the skin. Porphyrin absorbs blue light, triggering a chemical reaction that destroys bacteria on the skin. Red light therapy reduces skin inflammation, thereby improving acne. Acne treated with light therapy often reappears within 3-12 months. In one study, patients with severe acne experienced smoother, finer skin after light therapy without side effects. For example, a randomized, double-blind controlled trial demonstrated that the pulsed dye laser significantly reduced acne lesions without severe side effects post-treatment. The 1450-nanometer infrared laser was used in an uncontrolled study and reduced lesions by 83% after three treatments. Temporary pain, redness, and swelling were reported in most patients. Side effects were reported in patients with deep skin tones and hyperpigmentation (dark skin).
3. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Acne
This therapy combines a drug (called a photosensitizer) that is preferentially taken up by certain cell types with a specific light source. When used together, the photosensitizer and light destroy the target cells. For acne, the target is overactive sebaceous glands. The photosensitizer, called aminoacetyltransferase, is applied to the skin and left on for a variable period. The skin is then exposed to the light source, and the photosensitizer is deactivated. Side effects include pain during the procedure and post-treatment discoloration.
