Laser tattoo removal has limited effectiveness

Some view tattoos as symbols of mystery, sensuality, and unique individuality. Yet at laser cosmetic centers, many individuals seek to "erase" these tattoos for various reasons. However, while laser tattoo removal is effective, it remains challenging for red and green inks, particularly those deeply embedded by needle-based techniques.
Analysis of Why Laser Removal Is Ineffective for Needle-Applied and Red/Green Tattoos
Laser tattoo removal struggles with needle-applied and red/green tattoos because the needle penetrates the skin's surface layer. Shallow colors can be fully removed, but once the needle reaches the deeper dermal layer and pigment enters this zone, removal becomes difficult. Even laser treatment may leave a faint mark.
Additionally, laser tattoo removal selects different wavelengths based on the tattoo's color to target pigments. For instance, the 1064nm wavelength in Q-switched lasers is highly sensitive to brown and blue hues, while the 595nm wavelength targets certain light reds (pink). This means that brown, blue, and red pigment particles in the tattoo absorb the laser's instantaneous high energy, causing them to vaporize and shatter. These fragments are then absorbed by the body's tissues. Generally, light gray, light brown, and light blue are easier to remove with lasers, while red and green are the most challenging. Single-color tattoos are easier to remove, while complex designs with mixed colors are naturally the most difficult.
Complete laser tattoo removal typically requires at least one year.
Since each tattoo's color and design is unique, individualized laser treatment plans are necessary. Generally, a single laser session cannot fully remove a tattoo. Brown, blue, and gray tattoos require 4-6 sessions for complete recovery, while red and green tattoos need 7-8 sessions, with only partial removal possible in some cases. With each session, the tattoo fades slightly. Immediately after treatment, apply an ice pack to cool the area. Sessions should be spaced 2-3 months apart.
