Targeting the Problem with Light If you've ever consulted a laser specialist, you've likely been overwhelmed by the array of technical terms: erbium laser, ruby laser, dye laser... These are simply different names for lasers, each suited to treat specific skin concerns based on their wavelength. Lasers vary by the thousands depending on wavelength, with dozens used for cosmetic purposes.
Ten Steps to Laser Therapy
1. Choose a Clinic
More accurately, seek a qualified, skilled physician. A clinic's reputation or scale doesn't guarantee quality. Even within the same facility, different doctors may have varying approaches to laser treatment. Prioritize experienced practitioners with positive reviews.
2. Communicate with Your Doctor
Thoroughly understand the purpose of the laser treatment and the specific laser type being used. This helps alleviate fears about lasers and is essential for avoiding medical disputes.
3. Decide on Anesthesia
Generally, laser treatments do not require anesthesia, as the sensation is akin to a rubber band snapping against the skin. However, due to individual differences and varying sensitivity across body areas, the doctor will determine if anesthesia is needed and the appropriate method.
4. Cleanse Your Face
Though a minor step, thoroughly cleansing your face is crucial to prevent infection during scab formation.
5. Wear protective eyewear
Both you and the doctor must wear specialized protective eyewear to prevent potential retinal damage from high-energy laser exposure.
7. Aim and fire
The laser beam is applied in small, precise pulses, causing mild pain and a burning sensation. Treatment duration ranges from minutes to half an hour depending on the skin area. The number of sessions varies by condition: some issues like freckles or broken capillaries resolve in one session, while others like hair removal or birthmark removal may require several to dozens of sessions.
8. Post-Treatment Care
After laser cosmetic procedures, skin redness, swelling, warmth, or even bruising is normal. Minor bleeding may occur. Recovery typically takes 3–15 days, varying by individual.Apply a cold compress (Note: Not ice) to the treated area immediately after the procedure. If ulcers or blisters develop, treat them with antibiotic ointment and burn ointment. Low-concentration steroid ointment may also be used to reduce swelling.
9. Follow-up Treatments
A single laser treatment typically does not achieve optimal results. Generally, doctors recommend two or three additional sessions after the skin has healed.
10. Skin Recovery Period
Avoid sun exposure for three months and use sunscreen diligently. In rare cases, pigmentation may temporarily darken but will fade within 3-6 months.
You won't see a fresh, radiant complexion immediately after laser treatment. Instead, your skin may appear temporarily irritated and inflamed. Don't panic—what you need is careful care and time for recovery.
Most people experience redness, swelling, and skin sensitivity, followed by scabbing after one week. Some may also encounter the following:
1.Pigmentation
Approximately 30% of individuals experience darker skin tones after laser spot removal or photorejuvenation. This can result from an individual skin type's reaction to laser stimulation or post-treatment inflammatory pigmentation. Typically, this fades on its own within 2-3 months and is a temporary phenomenon.
2. Blisters
Similar to blisters from burns, excessive laser heat can cause blisters.Small blisters usually resolve without scarring. Blisters larger than 0.7 cm require drainage followed by application of burn ointment. Post-treatment hyperpigmentation may persist for 3-6 months. 3. Depigmentation The treated area may become uniformly lighter, often occurring with excessive energy levels or in individuals prone to vitiligo. This typically resolves within six months to a year.
4. Persistent Erythema
Caused by wound inflammation or excessive destruction of skin tissue.
5. Invisible Results
For laser wrinkle removal or photorejuvenation, which stimulate collagen fiber proliferation and reorganization in the dermis, visible effects may be difficult to discern immediately after redness and swelling subside. This is because dermal tissue activation and regeneration take 2-3 months to complete. Significant results typically become apparent only after six months of treatment.
6. Abnormal Conditions
Vascular dilation, scarring, or inflammatory infections may occur. Seek prompt medical attention if these arise.
