Laser spot removal boasts a well-established reputation for effectiveness, making it a treatment worth considering even for those unfamiliar with it. Pigmentation issues arise from complex and diverse causes, with different individuals struggling with various types of spots. So, which types of spots can laser removal effectively address, and what results can be expected?
Experts in photonic skin rejuvenation explain that lasers generate high-intensity, pulsed visible light. Different wavelengths are absorbed by specific colors or pigments in the skin, effectively treating the following types of spots:
1. Freckles: Small brown spots ranging from pinhead to rice grain size, scattered across the cheeks and bridge of the nose. Typically present since childhood and persistent throughout life.
2. Melasma: Mostly appearing gradually after puberty, ranging from a few to dozens of flat brown or black spots or raised papules, pinhead to rice grain in size, primarily distributed on the face and neck.Cheek Nevi: Grayish-blue clusters of pinhead to rice grain-sized spots appearing gradually after puberty on both cheekbones or below the outer corners of the eyes. Familial inheritance occurs in a minority of patients.
4. Age Spots: Several to dozens of waxy, rough brown patches or papules that gradually increase in number and size. More common on sun-exposed areas like the face and backs of hands.
5. Melasma: Brown patches that gradually increase after age 25, often appearing symmetrically on both cheeks. The color resembles cooked liver, hence the name "liver spots," though it is unrelated to liver disease.
6. Café-au-lait spots: Irregular light brown patches typically present at birth.
7. Nevus of Ota: Typically manifests as mottled gray-blue patches on the upper half of one side of the face, sometimes extending to the sclera of the eyes. Pigmentation reaches deep into the dermis.
8. Tattoos and Eyebrow Tattoos: Involve artificially implanting pigment into the dermis, or accidental injury causing foreign objects like pencil lead or iron filings to enter the skin. All these types of birthmarks and spots can be removed via laser treatment, with the number of sessions required depending on the pigment depth.
9. Sunspots: Oval-shaped, raised or flat, dark brown patches commonly appearing on the outer forearms, backs of hands, front of calves, and face. They range in size from a grain of rice to a nickel and typically emerge in middle age.
