What causes bleeding during pregnancy? While there are many reasons for bleeding in early pregnancy, expectant mothers shouldn't panic about protecting the pregnancy. It's essential to identify the true cause and seek prompt medical examination. Today, let's explore the common causes of bleeding in early pregnancy.
Most vaginal bleeding, if light, appears coffee-colored or brownish. Only heavy or active, persistent bleeding appears bright red. Common causes of vaginal bleeding include:
Cervical abnormalities: The most common cervical issue is cervical erosion. If brown discharge appears the day after intercourse (many people are unaware they're pregnant), cervical erosion should be considered;Second, cervical polyps can also cause bleeding, often persistent. Particular attention should be given to decidual polyps, which are specific to pregnancy and bleed more easily and persistently than cervical polyps, continuing until mid-pregnancy. These polyps cannot be surgically removed, as doing so may cause miscarriage or uncontrollable bleeding. Therefore, for bleeding in early pregnancy, first visit an OB/GYN to examine the cervix.
Embryonic Developmental Abnormalities: Most embryonic abnormalities stem from chromosomal abnormalities. Chromosomal issues account for 50%–60% of early miscarriages or fetal demise cases. Thus, for unexplained vaginal bleeding, after ruling out reproductive organ abnormalities or pathologies like cervical issues, it is advisable to let nature take its course rather than attempting to preserve the pregnancy. Otherwise, more significant complications may arise later.
Uterine malformations: Abnormalities like bicornuate or unicornuate uterus may cause minor bleeding during pregnancy as the abnormal endometrium thickens. Ultrasound examination is essential for early pregnancy bleeding in such cases.
Unexplained brown vaginal discharge: This question leaves me quite perplexed. Comparing pregnant women in China and abroad, I wonder why Chinese women experience early bleeding so frequently while Europeans do not. I speculate several reasons: Many women undergo uterine procedures before attempting pregnancy—abortions, medication-induced abortions, IUD insertions, curettage...These procedures can damage the endometrium, leading to scar bleeding during pregnancy. Secondly, China's polluted environment, chemically treated foods, chemically treated drinking water, and various genetically modified foods... whether these affect pregnancy remains unknown. Therefore, I always encourage pregnant women experiencing bleeding to let nature take its course if their HCG levels are normal. Bleeding isn't scary; reckless medication use is far more dangerous!Don't assume that because no one has proven a drug's harm to embryos, it's safe to use indiscriminately. Once the dangers of abuse are proven, who will sell regret pills to those who used it? Generally, research from Western scientists is more reliable, and they don't abuse drugs like China does, so no one studies this topic. Chinese experts, preoccupied with avoiding patient blame, show even less interest in this issue. Therefore, trusting yourself is the most reliable approach.
Post-IVF Pregnancy: Embryo development and endometrial growth often occur out of sync, frequently causing bleeding. This requires progesterone treatment. Many cases of polycystic ovary syndrome pregnancies also involve hormonal imbalances. However, after conception, decisions to preserve the pregnancy should be based on HCG levels, not progesterone levels.Urinary tract infection: Both acute and chronic UTIs can cause blood to appear when wiping after urination. If the blood is minimal but bright red, pay attention to hematuria. If you're unsure of the source, see an OB/GYN and get a routine urine test for infection! If you're unsure whether bleeding is from hemorrhoids, seek prompt medical attention upon noticing bleeding. A vaginal ultrasound can confirm the cause—if the vaginal probe is clean with no blood traces, the diagnosis is clear.
The exact cause of early pregnancy bleeding requires hospital examination for confirmation.
