Generally, tooth extraction requires sutures, which are removed after several days. Post-extraction suture removal care is crucial for wound healing and must be understood. Below are specific precautions to follow after suture removal.
After suture removal, the wound is usually healed, though the small puncture marks from the stitches may take another two to three days to close. Until these marks are fully healed, avoid consuming irritating foods—especially those that are excessively spicy, sour, cold, or hard, such as ice cream, chili peppers, or cold beverages.
If bleeding persists, take anti-inflammatory medication.Maintain strict oral hygiene post-extraction. After meals, rinse your mouth with warm water or a mild saltwater solution to effectively kill oral bacteria.
Avoid hot liquids on the day of extraction; only consume lukewarm water. Hot water increases blood flow to the wound, hindering healing and bone tissue formation. Cool water, conversely, slows blood flow in the affected area, promoting better healing.
Focus on liquid or soft foods, ensuring balanced nutrition, and avoid chewing-intensive items. Of course, if only one tooth was extracted, recovery will be much smoother. Maintain oral hygiene by rinsing with mouthwash after every meal. Brush regularly and absolutely avoid hard foods—otherwise, you'll need to visit the dentist again. On the day of extraction, consume soft, thin, and slightly cool foods. Avoid chewing on the affected side and refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol. Slightly pink saliva may be expelled on the day of extraction, which is normal and not cause for concern. However, if continuous bleeding occurs from the wound, seek immediate dental examination and treatment to stop the bleeding. Oral anti-inflammatory medication may be taken as directed. If swelling and pain persist for 3-4 days, consult your dentist.
Many people easily overlook these precautions, which can compromise the effectiveness of the extraction and hinder wound healing. Therefore, it's crucial to remember these guidelines and diligently follow post-extraction care instructions to ensure the wound heals quickly and healthily.
